Jiu Jitsu

Well I've started my new job as a public safety officer and have been in the hunt for a Police Job but would like to start some sort of close quarter defense training. Does anybody have any recommendations for gyms on the northwest side that I would be able to check out?

Thank you.

You wanna see my itinerary?

hey congrats on the new job

so where abouts in the northwest side?

keith moore teaches some really good, effective aikido. he mixes in a good amount of 'applied' technique. he was the director of Association for Tactical Applications. he has a few students who are cpd and one of the sargents will be starting up the cpd aikido club again soon.

nate defensor teaches escrima, which is a great filipino art which features alot of close quarters stuff.

feel free to pm me, dude

takes too long to move up in belts in bjj. should probably go with something like tae kwon do so you can get a black belt in 6 months and then wear it to work.

basically a quick straight shot down irving park to ravenswood. because 290's gonna be jacked up for a while, i've been taking that to cumberland and south when i head home. easy trek.

at any rate, best advice is to go and watch a class. that's the only way you'll know if its a fit or not.

there's also a bjj place on lincoln, north of laurence.

good luck.

The place you are talking about is Gracie Barra....they are not bad.

Checkout Newbreed Jiu Jitsu. I have trained there for several years. The team is awesome and has won NAGA 2006, 07, and 08. The guys train and party hard. Myself and a number of cops train there as well...well cops and criminals LOL.

They are in Skokie now which is not too far from you. There are a few members who actually live in/near Portage Park as well. I live just West of you in Jefferson Park. I think I have seen your around the NWside w/ that white GSXR600.

If you are interested PM/Email me. I'm sure Mark (the owner) would be more than happy to let you in a few classes for free. They also have open mat on Saturdays.

I agree, For what your doing Hap ki do, or even aikido would be your best bet. Its gonna give you the best skill set for what your doing, as c2m mentioned, they teach that to police and military for a reason.

But be careful the school you go to. Alot of them just want another student and don't bother teaching. Make sure the owner is actually involved in class and not having a black belt student teaching it. Mot schools like that just show you that the actual master is just there for a paycheck and flash his 5th degree around. Sadly the school I went to changed from a great school to just that and the teaching lacked and students left 1 by 1.

I took Hapkido for 7 years and various other MA for years under different teachers and the teacher makes the difference. Kickboxing isnt bad to take either, I've been looking for a school in that.

Anything that involves ground fighting, bc most fights end up on the ground. I'm thankful for my wrestling days it always comes out when I have to fight someone. Next person I fight on PCP I'm gonna put them in a cross face cradle.

I wouldn't go there. Back in the day they were a solid school and had a ton of great fighters. Over time they started to lose a lot of their tops guys/gals. It still has a history and tradition, but I believe there are a lot better schools around the area.

Also note that the reason arts like that are taught at police academies is because it's very "PC". Techinically Chicago and other academies do not officially teach closed fist strikes to the head, kicking to the head, choking, etc.

There actually is a Degerberg location at Milwaukee and Addison, which is very close to Portage Park (plus the parking situation is better than at the Lincoln Avenue location).

One thing about Degerberg (at least the Milwaukee/Addison location): the regularly scheduled classes (at least for adults) are centered mainly around the "blend" classes, which teach a mixture of boxing, kickboxing, grappling, stick and knife work, plus they did recently add some Krav-Maga, so it's not strictly a BJJ place, in case you are looking to specialize in BJJ.

It looks like they redid the website recently.

I just drove past there tonight, and it definitely is still in business and associated with them, and there is a sign touting their new Krav Maga program. I'll try to find out more Monday (I haven't been there in a month due to heavy demands at work but I hope to get back into the routine next week).

I knew a girl that went there for boxing. The trainer basically just used her as a punching bag so she was terrified of getting hit and never learned anything after a year.
