MMA Training Gyms & Amateur Fighting

In the last 2 months of working out and training hard I have developed a very strong interest in studying BJJ and training in MMA.

I know the number of amateur female fighters is relatively low compared to the number men but doing an amateur female MMA fight is something I am truly and seriously interested in doing.

Does anyone here go to or know of any reputable MMA gyms in the Chicagoland area. If there is a good reputable gym that is worth it, I will travel anywhere in the Chicagoland area to train.

Also, does anyone personally know any amateur MMA fighters?

Thanks!

There's an MMA gym in Elmhurst off of Rt 83, south of St. Charles Rd, on the east side (need to take a frontage road to get there, I think you turn by the Walmart).

I'm not sure if they're any good, but, there's one there.

Good luck!

There are a number of gyms in the area that could fit your bill. You have to also decide and commit to what you want to do.

If you want to train in BJJ specifically that is one thing. If you want to fight MMA that is another. Some bjj gyms are real good, but don't always focus on MMA. The same can be said of guys/girls who solely train MMA. I have trained in bjj specifically on and off for 4-5 years. Competed all over the Midwest and know about many of the gyms.

I can PM you a list of random schools that would be good. But MTC, Currans, Uflachers, New Breed, and a handful of others are good places to checkout.

The BJJ community is pretty tight in the Midwest. Everyone good knows everyone. You see all these peeps at the different comps. So it is easy to see which schools are doing well and which are McDojos.

I don't think she's a member here but there is a girl who rides motorcycles, competes in BJJ, and has some amatuer MMA fight under her belt in Chicago. Her BF frequents this site sometimes and maybe can put you in touch with her to chat.

I forget the name, but there is a small gym run by a female Brazilian blackbelt in Chicago too.

My son's wrestling coach highly recommends Overtime MMA in Naperville.

We won't start going there till the season is almost over - so don't know first hand yet !!??

Selston beat me to it, Heard some great things from people who trained at OvertimeMMA in naperville, MWTC in Schauburg as mentioned before is also good (friend of mine trained there for a bit).

Everyone needs a healthy way to relax, mine Church, and two wheels, a stretch of winding road, and a pipe loud enough to give me headaches and make squirrels explode. (Fixed curtousey of PWRMAD)

Nothing is impossible the second we say ill try your already admiting you can be defeated, and the second you say i cant or its to hard youve already failed.

That's Top Notch. I fought my first amateur fight (boxing) with them a few years ago. I don't think they are in Elmhurst anymore though.

there has to be at least 20 guys on here willing to let you practice your BJ on them. Also never trust any gym that doesn't sell afliction t shirts, thos are KEY.

I've heard Hackney's is good. My buddy trained in White Tiger Kenpo here alongside Keith Hackney. Might be worth looking into.

I can't be the only person who knows this reference.

As for the topic at hand..pick a place you are comfortable with and partners you can trust. You are literally placing your body in their hands. Try a few local ones out (most have free trial sessions). Pick the one you feel you can learn at.
