Who here does Crossfit?

My wife and I have been going to a crossfit gym now for approx. 3 months 3 times a week and we really enjoy it. Crossfit is a different kind of gym. Everything is done as a class / scheduled time and with the direct supervision of a professional trainer. Each class is approx. 1 hour long and generally involves 3 things.

The first is a warm up, this is prescribed and generally (although not always) done at your own pace.

After that is a strength / skill building activity. This can range from rope climbing to olympic weight lifting moves and a host of things in between.

The final is a Metabolic conditioning phase (or Met-Con). These activities are prescribed and timed. The goal is to finish as fast as possible. Some of these will be team based, others individual.

One of the cool parts of crossfit is that it can easily be taylored to meet your ability level. Regardless of your age, current physical condition, sex, etc. They can taylor the specific workout to you to ensure that it is both challenging and fun.

Another thing is that no two workouts are ever the same. Some are easier than others. This makes going to class exciting because you never know what type of torture you will be put through on that given day.

The gym that I participate at is giving away a 15% discount for the initial 4 weeks (called the onramp) to sign up and try it out. They also offer a free 3 day trial.

THis video isn't the gym that I belong to, but it does give a decent idea for those that have never heard of crossfit.

I keep looking into it, and I know some people that do it, but I've yet to pull the trigger. I got winded jogging for the train today.

They have a crossfit gym in Lombard, but I can't speak to be because I have never been. My wife and I participate at the one in Oak Park, and have been to the one in Naperville as well.

One thing I will add is that these workouts are not for the faint of heart. It doesn't take alot of skill or current fitness to start, but you have to be driven. Throwing up in class because you worked out that hard is worn as a badge of honor. We have a whiteboard in class called "the Uncle Pukie" list.

Joe Friel would get his ass kicked in a street fight. I'm not trying to look like Andy Schleck just yet.

The pro triathletes are too skinny. I need to be more ripped and buff than that :P

Just sign up at your local park... gangsta workouts are the best. Most ex-cons I see are ripped!

Crossfit, TRX, P90x, Insanity, etc I think are all good programs. People just do what works for them. CLSB is going to have the most fit riders if everyone keeps this up!

I don't know where you got $1000 from. All places have a slightly different rate structure. Dupage Crossfit charges $15 per class or $150 a month for unlimited.

The gym that I belong to charges $120 a month for a 3 day a week membership with a 1 year commitment. Slightly more if you want a unlimited membership, or if you prefer no commitment. This is more than a normal membership at a gym, but when you consider what you are getting (personal attention at every class from qualified trainers) it is a pretty good value. The class sizes are also typically very small. We have at least one trainer at every class

If you like the idea of a p90x style workout, but lack the drive to complete it on your own, or enjoy the team / club / group atmosphere, this is worth a look.

The Wall Street Journal posted a piece on somebody who does Crossfit.
It is an interesting read and provides some insite into what Crossfit is.
