need post workout help

I'm doing physical therapy for my knee replacement. I had a manipulation on monday the 18th to break up scar tissue. My knee still won't bend comfortably. Today the pt guy did some stretching and says my quad is really tight, and refusing to give. He gave me some exercises to try to get it stretching and limber so I can walk with a limp, and start using my leg normally. My question is what can I do for the post stretching pain? He says I need to ice it a few times a day to get the blood flow increased. I also got a script for some muscle relaxer for a few weeks. Any other suggestions for post- stretching? Any foods that will help recover faster? I'm doing biofreeze, and massage. Any help is appreciated.

Off the top of the head: Avocados (potassium and good fats), epsom salt bath (Ahhhh!), get plenty of water and real restful sleep.

ice is exactly the opposite what you want to do to promote bloodflow. It constricts, thats why it's used to reduce swelling. it keeps blood out. To increase bloodflow you want to use heat.

it would be cheaper than paying for a repaired hamstring if you blow it out trying to improve circulation with ice....

if they do i think i should get a turn in the tub for coming up with the idea. Because, of course, IM the one that said hot tub

are you sure he didnt say to alternate ice and heat? that is a common therapy. start with heat, do a few cycles back and forth and end with ice to keep the swelling down. 20 mins hot, 20 mins cold.

He said do 20 minutes of ice every hour. It would constrict the blood vessels and when I remove the ice fresh bolld would flow to the area. Heat causes too much swelling. He's not saying ice and then work out.

My stretching is more returning to normal range of motion. I'm supposed to lay on the couch and let my leg hang so that my foot is just above the floor. I lay on my side with a pillow between my knees, using a dog leash with the hand hole around my ankle I have to pull my leg back to put pressure on the quad. It's tight and not allowing my knee to bend properly. When he pushes on my knee with me on my stomach it feels like he is hitting a giant rubberband and my calf springs back down. So today we did a few different exercises to see what was causing my stopping point. I need to be able to bend to 155 degrees, I'm at about 102. Not too much more to go, but more than I'm able to do now.

i don't think this is the place to get concise advice on post-physical therapy advice... just sayin'

listen to your physical therapist and doc, don't rush anything and i'm sure you will be fine

A professional second opinion isn't out of line... For example, does she have trigger points in the muscles that are trying to be 'stretched' ? If so, work specifically on them first before trying to stretch the muscle. I'd like to think that's been covered, but it's a very often overlooked first step.

I wan't really looking for workout advice, just maybe some diet tips to help recover from muscle soreness and pain. I'm working on it slowly, that's the only way my muscle wants to proceed. I know a bunch of people here workout and might know of something worth trying to add to my diet, or what over the counter muscle creams work and what dosen't. I have biofreeze from the doctor but it didnt' help at all.

Arch we are doing trigger point massage before and after the stretching.
