I've messed up my knee playing soccer this spring and can't run any more - does walking on the 'mill work at all? I set it at 4 mph and 8% incline...

If you call it running, then it works. If it's the same thing everybody does every day and your HR is normal, then no.

By the way, sounds like you are dehydrated. You shouldn't be cramping 20 minutes in. Make sure you are very hydrated before working out in this heat unless you are used to doing that regularly.

OK on that note when do you drink water or some fluids? I read a running article that said at 1 hour you should have some water. Going passed 1 hour of running you need to also take some kind of Gatorade or other type drink to replenish.

Last night when I came home I just kept drinking a water since I knew I was gonna go on a run at around 8 or 9pm.

It could have been that. I normally hydrate and I'm pretty sure I was hydrated but I think it was more the way that I land when I run. I land on my forefoot as opposed to my heel so it puts a lot of strain on my calves and achilles tendon. That area has been sore for a quite a while even on Saturday when I ran after the swim.

BTW, either I'm a fast runner or there are some really slow runners at the lake because I was passing groups upon groups of people last Saturday.

Your body takes a while to absorb water into your muscles, and should start a few days before a big event. For general training, you should just keep yourself hydrated on a regular basis. If not, your performance suffers on that workout, and takes you even more time to recover from being that dehydrated. If you go into a workout lasting less than 1 hour IMO, you don't NEED to drink any water at all, but it is better for recovery and future workouts to not get dehydrated even though your performance for that workout is fine.

I didn't drink any water this morning for my 1 hour run, but when I got back I threw down 2 bottles for tomorrow's workout to get back to normal as quickly as possible. Any longer than that and I need water during, like that 12 mile run. If you don't drink during that, or go into that dehydrated, and you will blow up mid run for sure.

Drinking a buttload of water right before working out just makes your stomach slosh for the workout, because it's not absorbed right away into the body.

Cool thanks. I drink a lot of water on a daily basis. Just wanted to see what other people were doing for workouts 1+ hours. Where I run usually around my neighborhood there are no water fountains So trying to see if I run farther if I need to bring one of those little mini things.

You either bring a bottle with you like I did, or do loops and stash a bottle for each loop, or use a giant fucking sponge.

Lol!

I did 4.5 last night short marathon pace run.

Ken, you did pretty good Saturday. I waited for you guys a few minutes after Rick turned around. Then I remembered my dentist appointment! So I turned on my phone gps to use what was left of the battery to get me to the 6 mile mark. You and Scott weren't too far behind me at that point. Although, I'm wondering how many times you stopped and rested turning off your gps to come up with that 9min mile!!!??? lol hahaha!
