Slipped Disc / Sciatica - Anyone familiar?

Short Version:

- Car accident a month ago left me with a bad back. Xrays concluded that it was two slipped discs and they sent me home with some steroids.

- No improvement (other than huge muscles)

- Seemed to improve on its own during "normal" activity with only Advil for pain as necessary. (I have a high tolerance for pain - just ask my dominatrix) Even started to sleep through the night once in awhile.

- A week ago things went backward. No real incident that I can point to - just woke up one day and felt like absolute shit. Been that way ever since. Daily stretching is still very painful, as is sitting, standing, laying down, driving etc. Sleeping is sporadic at best.

Questions:

Do these tend to improve with time? Or should I consider PT / Drugs / Suicide?

I live in the city and work in Rolling Meadows so if anyone has a tip on someone to go see about this (doctors / drug dealers etc.) suggestions welciome.

I think the common course of treatment is children's tylenol and removing the sand from your vagina.

Is that what your knee specialist told you about your scrape when you pulled the My Little Pony bandaid off the other day?

Dammit. I was hoping you had something more serious Ed (...and I mean that in a good way). Are you getting steroid injections or that prolotherapy thing?

I'm guessing it won't be long til I'm selling the MX and getting a sumo? (kind of okay with this - but not really)

Roid - About every 4 months or so - it has REALLY helped the L4-L5 as that was the most serious and we are not working o the L5-S1

Giving up Running and MX has helped a ton too

Make sure they are the 10s and not the wussy ass 5s - No more than $15 a pill - Friend price should be $10 and street price should be $20 - Meet in the middle @ $15...........and some coupons for Happy Meal Toys - They have a whole stack at his office

Pffffit...Vcook took a slip and fall as his balance is notoriously suspect (see every sportbike getoff he's ever had) due to an inner ear infection. I was in a hit and run on I90 that left me and the Jeep worse for wear.

I will return - mark my words - to get all the way through the first third of that stupid workout program.

corticosteroids kill muscles so u must be having some serious placebo effect going lol

if you are still on them it could be a big factor in your sleep as well as plenty of other nasty side effects.

Some good shit in here. First time I've heard of burning the nerve off. That's my kind of "tape over the engine light" solution right there! If you can't feel the pain, does that increase the chances of re-injuring down the road?

(Steroids were only for a week, and I was pretty yoked to begin with so nothing special there)

Mike - I'm not selling the MX until after I've cleared the table at least once (you'll note I never said anything about landing it). After that I'm shopping for sumo stuff and threadjacking the board about it.

Go to a physical therapist and work on strengthening your back muscles that support your vertebrae. Steroids initially help with swollen soft tissue and that is why they give some relief initially. Same with OTC pain meds. Usually, after an injury they put you on steroids and then PT right away. At least you start the PT while you have some relief from the pain. The disc is pressing on the nerves and that’s why you’re in pain. PT will strengthen your back, which aids in keeping the disc from getting compressed and irritating the nerves. Back pain is a bitch, sorry.

my advice would be to see a spine specialist for treatment options. i ruptured a disk and it took about 6 months for most of the pain to subside. about two-three months for it to go from real pia to general pia once my weakness went away. my doc gave me an example and im not sure how my situation compares to yours. but he said that the disk tissue over many months can retract away from nerves and spinal cord. kind of like a gob of peanut butter left on the counter might get smaller after months alleviating your symptoms.

make sure you get a proper diagnosis. you said x-ray. soft tissue doesnt usally show on an x-ray. mine was only diagnosed after mri with specialist. prior to that my primary insisted that it was muscular, would only do an x-ray (which i knew was a complete waste of money at the time) and sent me to pt and it was making everything fucking worse. then i saw a chiro. imo they are mostly all witch doctors who will treat a new born infant and turn nobody away (again waste of time and $$) then finally i did what i should of done from the start and saw a competent doctor. good luck i hope you feel better

My wife has had multiple back surgeries, laminectomies and some other dealio where the fuse the spine and put some metal in there, and more spine injections than you can count.

Turns out going downstairs at 3am to turn off the light under the microwave wasnt such a good idea. She bounced down the wood stairs on her tailbone a few times and the rest is history. Its never going away, that's for damn sure.

This is where she goes-accross the street from Good Shepherd.

Smilin Jack in the front row middle is her guy. Valedictorian in his class at Rush I think.? FWIW

I'd let you see her scars but theyre too low and youre a charter member of EMR so... aint happenin!
