They're generally for older men or those who have hormone imbalance. Yes, they typically improve energy, libido, and improve muscle mass IF prescribed in the right dose. However, what they don't tell you is..... Once you start, you will have to take them for life, as your body will decrease or stop altogether the production of testosterone.

Same stuff, but the dosage that Bodybuilders use is much higher than what is typically prescribed for a condition of low testosterone.

Bodybuilders also use a range of other drugs in addition to Testosterone, including Human Growth Factor, Insulin, diuretics, estrogen blockers, and others.

Basically, if your total testosterone level (measured by blood test) is under a certain number (depends on your age), you are considered to have low testosterone levels. While this is a common test, it does not take into account 'free' verses 'bound' testosterone, nor the testosterone/estrogen balance in your body. An endocrinologist that is knowledgeable in this area should be consulted if you are considering this course of treatment. Most GP's aren't up to speed on this.

While it is possible to stop testosterone supplementation, it should be done with medical supervision. In any case, if you have low T, the condition is not likely to correct itself.

I had to get two blood tests to have the insurance company cover it. Still fighting it. My level is 313, low is considered below 300. It's a controlled substance, and here in the sunshine state, it's a pita to get them covered.

There's a big difference between actual Testosterone replacement medications and supplements of vitamins and minerals that stimulate the body to produce more of the hormone.
One of the more widely advertised supplements is "Ageless Male". It's supposed to add compounds that stimulate the body to produce more of its own testosterone. There's no guarantee it will actually do that but, it's a nutritional supplement and really shouldn't be harmful. That said, the wise thing to do is to talk to a doctor before taking anything and getting advice. You may not even have a problem or one that is related to your testosterone level.
AND...Know going in that when it comes to supplements, something that works well for your best friend or your neighbor may not do anything for you.

Like others have said, if you're serious, go to the doctor.

Anything you can buy off the shelf legally, doesn't work or barely works. They can also be very harsh on the body. And if for some reason they do work well, they won't be legal for very long.

Do you really need the boost that bad?

What Are the Dangers of Testosterone Supplements?

Testosterone is a hormone found in most mammals. It is the primary hormone in males and is a major contributor to the production of male sexual organs. It helps build muscle tissue and strength as well. Due to its desirable features, some companies have begun to capitalize on the creation of testosterone supplements. Though the hormone is created naturally within the human body, it can cause a variety of dangers when over used as a supplement. Consult with a healthcare specialist before starting any dietary supplement as a treatment option.

Prostate Cancer

The prostate gland helps with the production of semen in men. Prostate cancer develops in the prostate gland, which is located in the male reproductive system. Cancer usually attacks the prostate gland's cells first and it is one of the most common forms of cancer in men. Prostate is also potentially fatal in men with the disorder. According to MedlinePlus, prostate cancer can develop in men who receive testosterone therapy for a prolonged period. It is highly recommended that men taking testosterone therapy or supplements get checked often. Early detection can help reduce the progression of prostate cancer.

Secondary Polycythemia

Polycythemia is a condition that causes the production of too many red blood cells. It can go undetected for numerous months or even years. However, the lack of symptoms does not make it less dangerous. It can be potentially life threatening as it can lead to heart disease. According to the Hudson's FTM Resource Guide, an excessive amount of red blood cells can cause the blood to thicken, making it difficult to move freely throughout the body. Secondary polycythemia is primarily caused by testosterone hormone supplements. It can also cause an increase in blood clots.

Liver Damage

The liver is an important organ in the human body. The liver is also one of the largest organs with numerous jobs that help the body function properly. Some of the most common functions include purifying the blood and cleaning waste or toxins that enter the body. Individuals who use testosterone supplements are at a greater risk for severe liver damage. According to MedlinePlus, oral testosterone supplements can increase this risk when consumed on a regular basis over an extended amount of time. It is also possible that testosterone can cause other severe disorders such as cancer in the liver.

There is nothing firm, nothing balanced, nothing durable in all the universe. Nothing remains in its original state, each day, each hour, each moment, there is change. Change is the essence of life. Embrace change as you do life. To fight change is to live in the past.

I went to the doc complaining of all the symptoms listed in this thread. After blood tests, etc. he prescribed Androgel 1.62%. I've been on and off for the last 6 months or so (explained below).

First, it's really expensive. Make sure your insurance covers it. My co-pay is $20 so it's not bad but out of pocket is about $400 a bottle and normal dosage is 2 bottles a month (for me).

The biggest change I noticed is I go into asshole mode at the drop of a hat. Very short tempered. Admittedly I have very little patience to begin with but this just amplifies it for me. My wife can tell when I'm staying regular with it because my mental health really starts to decline. This may not be directly because of the Androgel. I have a stressful job and am one of those obsessive types that can't let things go. Once presented with a problem I have to figure it out. I'm sure Androgel is a contributing factor in my temperament when I take it as prescribed.

Next up is acne. After a week of applying it to my shoulders and upper arms I would start breaking out. Then the next application is SO much fun because the gel is alcohol based so it evaporates and dries. It really messes my skin up after continuous use.

Lastly, the risk of side effects for my daughter are too great. She's only 4 but if she comes in contact with my shirts or she crawls into bed with us in the morning I'm always worried she'll be exposed to it. To me this is what makes it not worth it.

You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich.
You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong.
You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift.
You cannot lift the wage earner up by pulling the wage payer down.
You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred.
You cannot build character and courage by taking away people's initiative and independence.
You cannot help people permanently by doing for them, what they could and should do for themselves.

I to am on Androgel 1.62%. I was going in once a month to get shot in ass, but that was more of a pain making appt. I to am worried about kids getting it but mine are older.

I went in got a normal check up which included blood work only to find out I had low T.

I can say i never really had an symptoms, as noodle still worked and I had plenty of energy (still even doing crossfit 3 times a week) and all that jazz. Have not noticed any improvements either other then zits on head but that could be from gel used in hair.

There is a discount card that makes it only $20 a month for a year.
