Started out at the front of Corral B, and my buddy said I was on TV for a bit too.
Gun went off, I took off and ran! Then I looked at my watch, and noticed I was in the low 6 minutes and knew I couldn't hold that pace the whole time, so I backed it down even though it felt pretty easy. I knew mile 3 was gonna hurt.
Mile 2 was the same, not bad, and I was running about a 7 minute pace, so better than I thought I could do, just wondering if I could maintain that pace the whole time, or die. Mile 3 my heels were on fire, and I had huge ass blisters on the back of my heels from wearing race shoes that I haven't worn in a year. Not the best decision. Mile 4 I just kept my head down and fought through the pain with my HR well into the 180s now. Coming over the last bridge before the finish was not fun, but I knew if I could just survive I'd have a great time.
Sprinted out the last half mile as best I could, and stopped my watch right over the mat to see my time was just over 34 minutes! Watch said 7 minutes per mile even, so I was figuring with the time at 34 minutes and the distance at 5 miles, my pace would be better than that in the 6s actually. I was pumped. That is, until I saw the official results which said just over 35 minutes and 7:06 pace.
I'm still happy with that, but I have no idea how an extra minute was added to the race distance. I could see the pace or distance being different on my watch, but the time should be exact right? Anyhow, great race and I'm motivated to get into Corral A next year. They walk around like they are fast or something.
