I should have phrased it as THE Shamrock Shuffle, not another one that is also a 5 mile race in some podunk town. Yes, the one downtown with 40 thousand other runners.

Now that I can certainly understand. That is the main reason I won't do the Chicago Tri. At least this race isn't too expensive. I hate how they force you to pickup your race packet on a different day, so you pay parking and spend more money just to do that. Crooks.

Well, that seems pretty aggro; I guess you're not coming into the city for anything then.

Its not a shithole; its the greatest City in the USA.

Yes, the politicians are shitbags, but the PEOPLE for the most part are really very nice. Yes, there's crime; but there's crime everywhere.

And, unless you've Done the Shuffle, you really don't know what you're missing. Its quite the fun party (24,000 average finishers, mostly women!) And no matter the weather, its still a great time; I've run it in blizzard conditions and STILL had a blast.

That is definitely the worst part about any downtown race. It should be mandatory that all race organizers offer a packet shipment option. I understand that it requires more resources on their part, but if you price it at $20 to $25 I am sure they can even pull a profit on it.

Exactly. It seems so easy to accommodate people, even when they are willing to pay a premium. I guess they don't have to, when stupid people like us still jump through the hoops to run the race anyways.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the city, but it has more overall headaches, then what it is worth for me. But $20 plus to park and the hassle to do so. So why is it that many business are leaving the Chicago area and IL in general for that matter? Fees, Fees and more Fees on top of the taxes and cost of doing business...

It is a great city to visit from the outside world..

I'm there every day so it's lost its luster for me. This is the whole reason I avoid the city races. It's a logistical nightmare to do a city race and/or expensive. Especially for a 5 mile race. I'll do smaller races like that more local. My wife still does the Chicago tri, which urks me, but the city still excites her. But, I'm content sitting on the sidelines for that one.

Listen youngster, you and I already have an agreement for this race that you were getting the packet. Now if your smart you might want to make it worth your while and start selling your services to the other fine members of CLSB.

I think I will likely be getting a hotel downtown the night before. Anyone needs their packet picked up i can make arrangements, for a small transaction fee!

Just let me know.

I got in corral B. To get in corral A you gotta have a 5K under 20 minutes. I'ma try to make this happen this year somewhere if I can.

That's a bit lofty for me but good luck. I think you would be better off registering as a girl and hitting that corral in 23mins or less. I cant believe they get a full minute more a mile.

Race report:

Started out at the front of Corral B, and my buddy said I was on TV for a bit too. Gun went off, I took off and ran! Then I looked at my watch, and noticed I was in the low 6 minutes and knew I couldn't hold that pace the whole time, so I backed it down even though it felt pretty easy. I knew mile 3 was gonna hurt.

Mile 2 was the same, not bad, and I was running about a 7 minute pace, so better than I thought I could do, just wondering if I could maintain that pace the whole time, or die. Mile 3 my heels were on fire, and I had huge ass blisters on the back of my heels from wearing race shoes that I haven't worn in a year. Not the best decision. Mile 4 I just kept my head down and fought through the pain with my HR well into the 180s now. Coming over the last bridge before the finish was not fun, but I knew if I could just survive I'd have a great time.

Sprinted out the last half mile as best I could, and stopped my watch right over the mat to see my time was just over 34 minutes! Watch said 7 minutes per mile even, so I was figuring with the time at 34 minutes and the distance at 5 miles, my pace would be better than that in the 6s actually. I was pumped. That is, until I saw the official results which said just over 35 minutes and 7:06 pace.

I'm still happy with that, but I have no idea how an extra minute was added to the race distance. I could see the pace or distance being different on my watch, but the time should be exact right? Anyhow, great race and I'm motivated to get into Corral A next year. They walk around like they are fast or something.

That was a mistake. Holy shit did that race hurt. My calves are tight as hell today between the running and the climbing yesterday. Can't believe I didn't get dropped.
