protein supplement - who uses them?

I just started a new diet which includes protein supplements. So far I tried mixing it with oatmeal and drinking it with a glass of water. Neither one tasted that good.

If you are using protein supplements,
- What kind are you using?
- What do you eat it with?

I used Cell-Tech through my football career (2 years in high school and then a year in college), started adding nitro-tech after high school, those work for building mass and strength as well as reducing fatigue and downtime. Took em both with water, diddnt taste great but i guess it diddnt bother me much.

Who wants a Protein Shake?!?!

I've used the Vegi-Fuel whey protein (and sometimes the liquid counterpart) to supplement the kid's diets on occasions. Mix it in some fruit smoothies and blend away.

I use glutamine instead of protein mixes, I find that it tastes fine in a glass of OJ.

Ok every response so far seems correct, but I think you're in for a nasty mother fuggen surprise if you mix protein with OJ!!!! I tried that once and it was like swallowing a clown who took a shower in orange flavored sugar.

costco sells protien powder that i can palate if i add a banana to it in the blender. otherwise myoplex deluxe strawberry is the only other stuff that i can drink without gagging, but it's expensive.

you could always add an instant pudding mix to it and make chocolate pudding out of it (or vanilla, or butterscotch, etc). there are all sorts of 'protein shake' recipies out there to make it taste a little better...

although in general, it will always taste like you're eating a piece of chalk mixed in dirty old shoe.

Muscle Milk is the best tasting out there hands down. I mix mine with water and it is the best I have had and I have been trying every brand since 1991. I think it's because Muscle milk uses a bit of real sugar as the sweetener rather than the fake bitter sweeteners everyone else uses. Also mikes very well in a shaker cup.

This one's great to hide in smoothies since it already has a flavor about on par with frozen concentrated OJ (without adding the water).

It's also a crappy shake. If you're gonna drink that, then head over to McD's and have one of those. With a shake that's got something along the lines of 15g sugar and 18g fat it ain't really a protein shake

For anyone that cares, here's some more fun facts about protein. I happened to notice that the primary protein used in this shake is alpha and beta caseins. I don't really know the difference between the two, but caseins are found in milk sources...at least humans and cows as far as I know. Caseins, after being injested, get broken down by your tummy into casomorphins (sp?). And these casomorphins can have euphoric and/or pain killing properties. I haven't looked deep into the research, but have heard that the effects can be comprable to opium or morphine. This would probably explain why folks will tell you to have a glass of warm milk before going to bed...or before you start cutting yourself to calm the beast that is within I guess.

+1 The general rule with protein powders/shakes is if it tastes good than its not that great for you.

I use Nature's Best Isopure Low Carb protein; tastes like shit but its damn good for you:

What? I'm pretty sure its the Gary Jules cover of a Tears for Fears song. It's from the Donna Darko soundtrack if I remember correctly.
