Diet Soda

So I have this co-worker that has been on some brain meds that (she says) caused to gain a ton of weight. She is now on one diet or another but still gets a 32oz of Diet Soda which from what I understand are not any better than a regular soda. I told her that if she is serious about loosing weight than she should cut soda out of her intake all together. Does anyone have any insight as far as loosing weight and drinking diet?

Water works best when you are trying to lose weight

Losing weight is not rocket science. Intake fewer calories than you burn.

I understand that and so does she but I'm referring to a zero calorie nutracrap sodas. She doesn't want to drink water, I suggested some freshly brewed green tea or even regular tea. Isn't drinking a diet as bad as drinking a regular soda?

Drinking diet is just as bad or worse, for different reasons.

Hell, just toss a splash of juice in the water for flavor. It doesn't add many carbs and at least gives it a taste.

The experts have the same question.

According to math, regular soda has 150 calories per can, and diet has none.

I know everybody's gonna say that it's gonna kill you and it still makes you gain weight, but until I see a conclusive, controlled study, I think it's BS. I still cut soda out of my intake altogether just to be safe. Let her have her soda! I bet she's gaining weight due to the same time-tested reasons (too many calories and too little exercise).

the composition of the sugar substitute in diet sodas is so complex that your body doesn't have time to break it down before it passes it out so yeah, that's not what is making your co-worker fat.

it's probably all the bon bons she's hoover-ing down in front of the television that's making her expand

I can see if the argument was regular soda vs plain water (calories vs no calories), obviously in that argument lack of calories wins but when I see things I can't pronounce like Aspartame, Phosphoric Acid, Potassium Benzoate than i really start to wonder.

So what I heard from a nutritionist a while back is that while there are toxins/chemicals in your body than your liver is unable to process fat. Wouldn't things like Aspartame be considered a chemical/mild toxin?

As far a gaining weight, she said that it was from the brain meds she was/is? on for her "depression"

edit: and this medication is also a chemical and she said that she blew up like a balloon while she was on it.

Diet soda has no calories.... so from a weight POV it doesn't hurt.

Caffiene can make you hungry, not great if you are dieting.

When the body processes carbonated beverage it *can* errode your bone
mass to a certain degree as it strips calcium from your body. If you get
enough other calcium I imagine this can be compensated for as well.

Same reason carbonated beverages are bad for your teeth...
that is more direct obviosly.

A cure for that depressed -> comfort food cycle is exercise. After about 1-2 weeks of regular exercise (3+ days, 1+ hours at a time) everyone feels better. "Brain meds" may be antidepressants and many of those cause weight gain (oddly enough).

I avoid the diet stuff too when I can. I stopped drinking coffee and can't believe how much better I feel.

So you are saying that plain carbonated water will have that effect as well or are you referring to soda in general?

I believe this is true of any carbonated beverage regardless of
other ingedients like SUgar / Nutrasweet / Caffine whatever.

It may not be true for some naturally carboneted beverages
as they may get their bubbles from other sources.

An interesting comment comes to mind from "Supersize Me".

The guy in the movie talked about his mood swings between meals.

I believe that there is truth in this.

When you eat a healty diet and exersize, mood is good and stable.

When you eat a poorer diet, consume alcahol, you mood swings a lot more.

Funny enough, it's a trap. In a bad mood, eat something and it
stimulates the please center and all is good with the world, for a
few minutes anyway.....until you eat again.

Aspartame doesn't break down? That's a new one.

There are plenty of toxicity studies that show it hydrolysed in the gut into its metabolites: aspartic acid, phenylalanine, methanol and cyclised diketopiperazine; each of which has their own set of properties and effects on the body.

While the net carb intake may be zero, the intake is not benign.

oh no, it does break down, but not enough so that you actually yield anything from it, hence the claim of zero or one calorie softdrinks

compare the structure of any polysaccharide to a simple sugar molecule and you'll see that going from point A to point B in your digestive system requires a lot more work to break up the aspartame (or whatever) compared to normal table sugar

so yeah, I agree with you on all the other stuff too

oK I buy the argument that the nutracrap does not have any calories but sugar (and I mean real sugar here not the high fructose crap) is natural substance that can be broken down by your body and burned off quite easily while a synthetic chemical like the nutracrap may or not break down into other chemicals which are going to have side effects of some sort.

you've seen the SNL skits and other comedy routines where some person goes in and orders some outrageous amount of food and then ends the order with a "oh yeah, and a diet soda please"

that's probably the same thing going on with your friend. people that drink diet soda overcompensate on their eating habits because they figure they've got a little extra room on the calorie counter because their drink has zero calories.

You're just looking at her as a cheap date, aren't ya? She orders whatever she wants and you eat half of her meal and claim it's to help her diet

Diet Soda is crap. I personally don't touch food with lab-sugar, I still think all that crap will end up causing cancer.

Tell her it drink water and green tea. She'll get used to water and not miss pop when the weight starts to come off.

I drink a ton of diet coke daily. I am embarrassed to even tell you all. But, I have lost about 50 pounds over the last couple years while consuming diet coke. I also drink coffee, tea and water. IMHO diet coke will not be the main cause of weight gain or the reason for not losing weight.
As some posters have stated. You have to burn more calories than you consume in order to lose weight. It was not until I started counting calories that I really knew how much I was consuming. One pound = 3,500 calories. If you eat 3000 calories a day and burn off an additional 4000 calories you will have a 1000 calorie deficit for the day. If you could do this for one week you should lose about 2 pounds. Its really that simple. Have your friend buy the book, "Winning By Losing" authored by Jillian Michaels who is the trainer on The Biggest Loser Show. Straight shit from her. Worked for me.
