lemme guess...lower back pains, more on the left (your hitting side) rather than the right?

if so, it doesn't matter how much exercise you do, the problem you need to correct is your approach before spiking.

not being a Spring chicken anymore, you can't just stand around and then explode into jump/twist/spike without straining your lower back.

go get a massage and cold treatment applications to ease the immediate pain

don't try to exercise until the pain is gone

so when are we getting together to terrorize the Wheeling/Arlington Heights Park District Leagues?

oh yeah back on topic...our coach in highschool had us doing a bunch of spring box jumps to build up legs/back/abs. 1-3ft varying heights. another was to stand, drop to a crouch, extend legs behind and get into push-up position, reverse, repeat a few hundred times

Not sure if this will work for you, but yoga helped me a lot, specifically Bikram yoga. Also some chiropractor visits. With yoga I noticed the effect in a couple of weeks.

Where do you play? I'm in Wheeling and always looking for a good game

Depending on why it's hurt, it's tough to say if you should or shouldn't work it out at this time and how much. You may want to check with a physical therapist before taking our advice because you might get info from me or anyone else that can hurt more than help. At least I personally wouldn't feel comfy suggesting one thing or another at this point.

If its a consistent problem you may want to talk to a physical therapist. If you explain the problem to them, in one session they can show you a bunch of exercises that can strengthen the area and the support muscles (the ones you use to compensate when your back hurts). Most of the exercises don't take any special equipment so you can do them at home and figure out which ones work for you. My wife and I have had good luck at the Athletico in Wheeling.

I have arthritis in my lower back from my college and semi-pro football career (well that and my being a fat-ass) and back spasms aren't something I'd wish on anyone.

Lift Really Heavy weights with a jerking motion and twist as you do them arch your back with them over your head.

my suggestion would be to warm up better. I usually end up hurting my back if I don't warm up properly.

My name is JB, people call me JB

Yoga is great. I used a yoga DVD, and I really, really like that a lot.

I've got a broken back from when I was four to six years old, and I have some regular, cronic pain. Yoga really helps.
