Lost About 10lbs of Tummy in 1 Month

Well, as some of you know, I have a bad lower back containing (3) herniated discs - L4, L5 and S1 - I have been to PT, Acupuncture, Deep Tissue Massage and many a Chiro - Nothing has worked - I have been undergoing Epidurals about every 4-6 months where they inject a mild steroid into the discs to help them strengthen and even out (Picture a jelly Donut with all the jelly crammed to one side and the other is just thin as can be) - The Epis are helping but will never get the Discs back to normal - Last year my Doc told me to "stop running or stop walking" - Well, for a old fuck like myself who ran about 4 times a week for exercise and stress relief, this sucked - Not too mention weight gain and fatigue - Fast Foreword to present day - I now do Core Power Yoga in a room heated to 103 degrees, 4 times a week and am in the best shape I have been in since my early 20s, pre Coke Addiction

Now, I know what you think - GA-HAY!!! - Well, certain types of Yoga are not for me - You can keep all the chanting and "flow based" types as they just do not bode well with my personality - Core Power Yoga on the other hand is a different type of Yoga - Rather than flowing (if I may) from one pose to the next, you get into a pose and stretch further and further AND then they mix in a hard core ab workout - it is not "Bikram" Yoga but rather the concept of with a Modern twist.

Where are the ramblings of this old hipster going? - Well, I'm glad you asked - My Back is becoming stronger, my abs are becoming stronger hence relieving some of the stress on the lower back and the fatigue is gone - This has helped me TREMENDOUSLY and my over all well being is back in tact - Throw in dropping at least 10lbs of fat and toning every muscle in my body and it just works for me

So, if any of you "New Years Reso" types are struggling to find something to help get ya back into shape, consider this as it has helped me tons - Stronger Core with a better sense of balance will definitely be a bonus for the 2010 Riding/Racing Season

Sidebar, the classes are 90% women who are bendy as hell and barely dressed - SOOOOO tough hiding a boner in class

I've done a lot of Bikram Yoga; I LOVE it. Totally agree with you that it's great.

I don't have the boner troubles you do, though

Glad it's working for ya! I do Bikram on and off and it's always a blast. Every time I come back after a long break I wonder WTF did I stop going, it feels so good .

Just curious - if you've done Bikram, how CPY is different from it? From my experience Bikram also doesn't involve much spiritual BS... pretty much just a stretching workout.

I can't imagine how you've managed to ride MX tracks , with so much damage to spine disks.
. don't know about yoga , but in general , it helps to develop extra muscle support around problem areas.

What sucks though , once you get all out of shape, it comes right back...

Bikram is:

- Go into pose, stretch it, come out of pose and go back in for a 2nd stretch and then proceed to the opposite side of the body

- CPY is enter into the pose for one stretch and move to the next with a concentration on using your Core to transition between poses then sprinkle in the Ab portion as the basis is again on the strengthening of the Core

DB - I try to use as much upper body as I can while on the MX track and do not go balls out - Not the best form of course but it is all I can do for now - Getting my Core back in shape is helping a TON as it takes some of the stress off the lower back when trying to support

Also, riding the SuMo and Dirty with the wide bars and upright seating is helping

Sportbikes KILLED my back - Not so much when riding but when I dismounted, I was in such pain from being hunched over that it got to be too much pain for the fun

The SuperDuke helped me to discover this - I could ride 600+ mile days and not have sore wrists and back - Loves me some wide bars

I have similar back problems. Although it's tempting to get back out and run, every time I do I'm in pain for 3 days. I not stick to lifting, biking, and swimming.

Where you doing yoga at? Why do I have a feeling you are going to bang all those chicks?

I found Bikram to be a little more than just poses and switching sides; I have had back pain ever since a bad wreck in '93 and nothing has been better for me than Bikram. It did wonders for my core because of all the balance work. And, it really helps me be able to run down here in the insane summer heat. Normally can't run when it's much above 90 but when I'm running and doing Bikram I can handle higher temps.

CPY IS more about the abs, though. I've wanted to try it but the classes by me are in an inconvenient location.

Yeah, I did Bikram for many months but my answer to homies questions was just a brief explanation

The C in CPY is for Core and that is what they teach - Hold the pose and transition to the next all with your Core

Bikram is a bit more old school, where as CPY is less "hippy" and more "hip" if you will

Yeah I could live without all the tree huggers at my BY studio. You'd think nearly nekkid women were attractive, but that doesn't count women with armpit hair.

Good for you, man. I think guys doing yoga are hawt

The only problems I've seen from a professional standpoint are that the super heated styles allow the muscles to stretch past where they're supposed to, resulting in micro tears. And while probably not a problem for warmer climates, the shock of exiting into subzero temps can cause the muscles to seize up.
I'm more of a 'flow' type, but I like to mix iin different styles for fun.
