POST: April 10 - Blackhawk Farms

I know some people are there today, but I thought I would get this thing started since I'm already back.

Had a blast, met a few of you like Cheyenne (thanks for the delivery), JKruegar, Kim, Nolan, Gtotklin, and I'm sure some others. I saw you got there King and were riding in Beginner with me on your Buell. I was just busy and pitted so far away from everyone I didn't get a chance to say hi.

Anyway more details in a bit...

If any of you were there I was riding this bike in Beginner. Gonna type of a quick review of my day in a bit...

Was awesome. I did a few Sylvania Track Time days in the 90s, but those offered very little in terms of instruction.

Saturday was just a blast. The first few sessions had me just getting me acclimated to riding again and riding a new bike. The most I had ridden my GSXR was just around my neighborhood in 1st - 3rd gear.

The CRs were really great and set a pace to match our riding. As each session went on I really started to get comfortable and have fun with the riding. I definitely wanted to thank the CR "Kim". That lady is fast! She towed me a few times and really had a lot of great tips to improve my riding. If you read this Kim I definitely am working on sticking my head out Greg (Gtotklin sp?) gave me a nice tow later in the afternoon with his SV. This was perfect because just prior to going out I was telling my friend if we had an open track and a CR to follow/tow we could probably get faster and learn the lines better. I think I followed Greg for about 4 laps of clean track until the end of the session. That was a blast and again I really picked up a lot from following him. Jesse (JKruegar sp?) I spoke with a few times and I think he was our lead CR one session.

The Turn One Racing guys were awesome and helped put a baseline suspension and sag setting on my bike. Joe had some really great techniques he suggested as well.

NESBA ran a great day and there were very few incidents. I was very impressed and will be signed up for the next Blackhawk date.

I know some people do not recommend lap timers for beginners, but one came with my bike and I wanted to use it since I had it. The first two sessions I was floating all over the place in the 1.40-47 range. After that I was more comfortable and having fun. With that and the coaching from KIM, Greg, and a few other CRs I got my times down. The last 2-3 sessions I got more open track and was relaxed with the pace. In the later sessions my friend and I were floating in the 1.35.00 range. Then the 2nd to last and last session I got down to 1.30 flat. This was all while having fun and feeling comfortable.

Oh...only once I got impatient and tried to pass a guy on the outside before we hit turn 6. We ended up side by side and I thought if I turned in we might hit so I went straight. This was about a 400 yard trip in the grass :P I guess that area is an old runway. I actually remember someone on this forum writing about not hitting your front brake when your on the grass or you will surely crash. So I just kept feathering my rear brake until I slowed down. Then I went back the 400yards back near the corner marshall and got back on the track and just went in for the session to relax. It was funny in my head because I specifically remember reading on the forum about using the back break. After that I did speak to some CRs and they went over some better options and places to pass slower riders.

Can't wait for round 2!

Trackday review (BHF 04/10/2010)

First and foremost i wanna thank god for allowing me to get the track, ride 5 sessions, and ride home without crashing...

2nd'ly I want to thank NESBA and two of their CR's Kim and Greg....they helped me so much out there. I was just beginning to scratch the surface during my last 2 sessions....

The day went well, it was a cold ride in from chicago...but the sun was up all day with a decent breeze while i was on the track...

My riding...well lets just say i was GREEN....Bob Marley Green...
I'm the road captain of my organization and after riding the way i did on those first 3 sessions I realize i didnt know d#ck about riding a sportbike...

The bike itself wasnt bad...there were many missed shifts, but i'll blame that on the non-broken in gear i was wearing

Greg and Kim sat down with me and broke it down...and for that i am grateful

after a long lunch i stretched and tried it again

Kim told me that i made improvements and that she was less worried about my riding...The next session (which ended up being my final) i decided to keep that same mindset and ride up with the mid range B group...it was not bad at all i was pretty smooth until the 4th or 5th lap when i got my Charley Horse... i guess my body was ready to eat and go home...

All and all i finished without crashing...there were many of those...i didnt see many people from the forum but im sure i will next time around

see yall at road america...hopefully i'll have a trailer this time...

you cant ride it like a 1000
you cant ride it like a 600
you just gotta ride it like a BUELL

awesome that you made it.

I saw you pitted over in the corner by the tower, but kept forgetting to say HI or just got busy. I was in Beginner with you. I made a "POST: April 10 thread" probably as you wrote this.

https://chicagolandsportbikes.com/for...d.php?t=101969

Anyway great to see you out there and hopefully see you more.

Awesome deal man!
Welcome to the addiction and great write up.

Going to the track for the first time is an awesome humbling experience isn't it? Props to you for keeping your head about you and riding without letting your ego get you in over your head.

No sarcasm intended there. Props. I'd leave you rep but I'm on my phone.

Can't wait to meet a few more of you out at the track this year.

Btw I hear that Kim girl is fast not so sure about that Greg guy though hahahah lol

Glad you had fun out there. Welcome to the addiction. Has anyone talked about credit card overload yet???

Anywho, from the list of names up there, you ran into some pretty good peeps (except Greg and Jesse... jeesh what a combo to meet on your first day ). Hope that didn't scare you from coming back.

It was a blast, pretty cool setup.

Thanks to everyone for showing me a bunch of stuff. Unfortunantly did I had to leave early today.

It's a f*ing blast to follow some fast guys around the track and just picking us what they put down. THANKS.

Had a blast. I saw Nexus in the B group but had no idea where he was pitting so I didn't get to talk with him. Nolan helped get me through tech. During one of the sessions, I decided to pass someone just before turn 6 and didn't leave myself enough room to make the turn. I headed off into the grass for a brief moment but got right back on. I sought some help from Greg after lunch and he towed me around a little bit helping me set up passes. Congrats to Stefan for graduating from B to A. Thanks for letting me pit with you again Cheyenne.

Over all, it was a GREAT weekend. We had beautiful weather, I don't think anyone from CLSB hit the deck, and it was a great way to break in the season. NESBA - Thank you very much for putting this together for us and thank you to all the CRs that make this possible. I know I'll be going to many more events this year.

Pocket Rocket what bike were you on? If you pitted by/with Cheyenne I stopped by there early before session one, but he was by himself.

Were you in Beginner with me?

We pitted waaaay over by T4 and there was basically no one there We thought it was going to be more crowded. Next time I'm gonna try and pit closer to everyone in the paddock.

Only pics I took worth sharing...

What number? I remember some bikes and numbers Did you see the guy when he crashed in T1? It is still a mystery how he crashed, but he was not in the grass passed T1. He was a few feet from the apex in the middle of the track! I almost ran him over, but luckily didn't tunnel vision and made the turn after being super hard on the brakes.

Great Weekend!! Was a blast to get back out on the track and to meet some new peeps and see old friends. Saturday was a little rusty and with trying new tires I didn't push much. Sunday things started to feel better but damn after not riding for some time and jumping on the track I was spent before 3pm and packed up.

Glad for anyone who went off or crashed the whole weekend was ok.

Thanks to NESBA for putting this on and the great price!!

I'm sick of following my dreams. I'm just going to ask them where they're goin', and hook up with them later!!

Yup, I was 2 bikes behind him while both him and his bike were doing barrel rolls down into turn 1. I didn't see how it happened, just wanted to get by it without me crashing.

It was a really fun weekend. I spent both days as the Beginner group captain and really enjoyed helping people learn and advance their skills.

I want to congratulate Germany, C.B., Gearhead, and j_fuggin_t on their bumps. Impressive way to start the season!

It was great to see all the CLSB folks out there enjoying near perfect weather on the racetrack. Hope to see some of you at Road America in a couple weeks.
