IOWA Speedway Anyone?

Looking for riders to share the trip to Iowa Speedway this coming weekend with me... any takers?

New track, great pavement, short and easy to learn. We are NOT running the banking.

Blackhawk

and the list goes on

The moto ST issue was in part due to the need to use the timing loop, which forced them to use a different configuration. (using the banking)

We stopped by to look the place over on our last trip to MAM. It seems that being a infield course, the layout is not set in stone. There appeared to be many, many configurations.

It sounds like track management is receptive to input from riders. Perhaps someday they will build a real RR track somewhere on the rest of the property.

Thanks Mort, apparently he didn't read enough of the posts that he referenced, OR both of the lines in my post to see that we are NOT running the banking.

BTW - According to CCS, anyone that rides Track Days sucks unless they are just racers looking for track time.

From a surface and facility standpoint, Iowa is highly rated and supposed to be a super track. Granted, as Twisted tried to point out, the banking transition can be a problem. Since we are not running the banking (for those of you who didn't figure that out yet), it should be a great trip.

New track, new region, low registration will equal TONS of track time. Who knows, maybe even a green track weekend (open track time, no groups) if we are lucky.

Kinda IRONIC that his signature includes this:

Dave, you forgot Road Atlanta too that place that just put a certain AMA racer in the hospital. Oh and CCS has major accidents every year they race there, but I am pretty sure it will not be removed from the schedule anytime soon.

To recap the Iowa Speedway. I wasn't to sure of the track when we arrived. It's a 7/8's mile tri-oval. So the infield isn't to big when you put in garages, parking and safety buildings with a concession stand. You can see the whole oval around you. So where the heck is the infield that we're running? We have to stay on the apron before the banking? I thought I wasted my time. We did a track walk and I thought the infield would be better suited to pocket bikes or go carts.

Turns out this track is fun! The apron below the banking is all you need. Being that it's a tri-oval, there is a line that you need to run as well. It's not just a constant radius arc. We also added a Daytona style chicane in the back section. The infield is tight! You really have to find the right line to get through there. Or just back it in through half the corners like Mr. Hix and I were trying to do. His attempts were more dramatic then mine.

Then we had a straight that runs down the front of the track near the grand stands. It's an absolutely top notch facility! The staff was fabulous. They even took the time to take us out on a golf cart between sessions so we could give them suggestions on how to better use the facilities. We were invited to check out the Nascar spotters boxes and welcomed to go to the media center and race control centers as well. This was only the 3rd or 4th time they had bikes out there. I think they were given quite a show during our CR A group session. According to 5axis (the track marshal for the weekend) they were quite vocal in their statements on the radio's and all the excessive tire squealing got everyones attention. Tons of fun!

The best part is you have tons of left turns. Bring all those Midwest take offs and finish them off! Being on the apron, if you do run wide, you just end up on the banking. It's really high and a completely different perspective up there looking down! Though I can't imagine taking that transition at a race pace. It's definitely a good idea to stay off of it.

I would definitely go back as long as the event isn't run on the banking. Which will never occur with Nesba. Like any track, you have to take what the track surface will give you and respect your surroundings. The track surface is new asphalt and concrete. The infield was void of any imperfections from cars. It was a ton of fun.

I had an awesome time and the track is a blast. Really got to work on my lefts and transitions. The most fun as definitely the CR fest on Sunday. That was a blast.

Loved watching everyone working on backing it in.... Hix was having a blast working on it!

i agree all around. fast track and very technical on the back half. the speedway has posted its pictures if you want to take at look -

www.digitalbluestar.com

one of my only issues with the track was the paint stripes. who the hell puts stripes on a track? damn those things were slippery. once you learned to avoid them it was all good. thanks again for the ride wink...it was entertaining to say the least.

hix took video on the last day so i'll try to post that up on youtube sometime this week.
