Saw that in popular science earlier this year, was waiting to see them actually put on a car. Pretty Sweet!! I bet they'll need different tire changers....in fact, how would you change one of those?! lol
wow that looks totally weird. it looks like the wheel is so fragile... I wonder how strong they are and how hard you can push the car with those things on...
on a plus note too: you can't bend your rims or bust your hubcaps on the curb when you're botching a parallel parking attempt. :laughing
That's a good point Chuckie. I also doubt that the homies will be rolling on 24"s with these guys anytime soon, the sidewall looks massive. That Audi looks to be sporting 225/60 14s or similar.
I'd think that if you hit a curb hard, that it might damage axle because they are stiffer...laterally i think it's called?...so that a lot of the energy is not absorbed like a pneumatic tire would do. Either that or rip it off the rim heheh

I think it's a tire/wheel combination, when the tire is junk you throw out the whole tire AND wheel. I sure hope they put sidewalls on the production version of those things because they sure are ugly :laughing .
Very cool, I think the open design is just to show it's makeup. Somehow they would have to close off the honeycomb because it would catch all sorts of debris and they off the balance of the wheel. Very interesting.
That Audi looks to be squatting pretty hard, is that this wierd tire going to mush with the lateral Gs?
Pretty damn cool, but why? Sure you won't get puncture flats, but it still has tread that will wear, and probably costs WAY more than any amount of tire repairs that a normal person would go through during the life of a normal set of tires.
I have heard.....
-the spokes will be covered (armor guys can relax)
-lateral g's will be better than low profle tires for sports cars
-supposed to eventually be cheaper
-and obvousily wont have to worry about flats
Okay, for all those saying this tire is ugly remember that the sides will be covered so it'll likely look like an ordinary tire.
Chuckie, yes some plastic does get brittle at sub-zero temps, but so does rubber. And all the tires we now have are made to handle those temperatures so I'm sure these new wheels will be made to do so as well.
In fact, these will be better at different temps because you don't have to worry about the air in the tire contracting in the cold or expanding in the heat.
Now my question is when they will have this technology for motorcycles.
I'd buy a set now for my wife's car. I swear if there is a nail on the road within a five mile radius, she finds it and drives over it....
