The new 'Wings are sweeet... I rode my stepdad's 03 and was surprised at how nimble it was - even at low speeds.

Ken, go demo ride a 'Wing before you get one. They are great bikes, but I have a few picks that I personally don't like. Mostly little stuff, but enough that I couldn't live with one. I'm thinking FJR, but need to demo one as soon as the weather gets nice. Of course there is the new BMW R1200GS too.

lol.... I remember that. The dude didn't do too bad, either. He did go off into the grass on Dead bear RIGHT in front of me. He rode the grass for a few seconds then got back onto the track like nothing happened.

Good buy, Ken. They are sweet bikes.

I'm afraid to ride an 1800. I'd be in debt instantly.
I want a black 1800.... to park next to the R1 and the new Hog that I don't have either

They are great bikes.
I hurt my back some years ago and had to sell my FJ1100 (1387)and started on the goldwing thing.

The hardest thing for me was dealing with the fact that me (sport bike guy) would drive this geezer ride. Once I got past that they were the best bikes I ever had....
cops don't pay much attention, plus if you know how to ride.. all the weight is down low so you can toss em around pretty good... it freaks people out how zoomy they are for their size.

I used to like torturing my harley buddies and send em back to the parts store for more go fast goodies.. it was kinda funny.

My girlfriend and I have put almost 60k on this one over the past few years.... been to Colorado, New Mexico with it. down south a bunch of times... Seeing America on a bike is just an awesome experience.

I hear the new ones handle really great. 118 hp 125 FPT out of the box isn't too shabby. Post up a review of it once you take one for a test blast.

Ken - all due respect to the GW's, but you aren't ready for the GW yet... she can't POSSIBLY want to ride that often... you'll drag floorboards all over the place... soooo.... you should buy the 2005 Yamaha FJR1300 (delivered this July) and you'll be MUCH happier! Tthe best part is - I'll buy it from you (at a SUPER discount) next summer when you ARE ready to slow down and ride a GW!

Shrek, I never called you Ken... I swear!

It may be really nice for you and the wife to ride with some other cruiser couples, or get out there alone on the weekends, enjoying the scenery. I would LOVE that... if I didn't live in IL where it takes 2-3 boring hours of boring roads to get to the scenic ones... I'd buy an RV instead or spend the money HERE:

http://www.pashnittours.com

I'm sure you plan on keeping it for the long term and doing a lot long rides - so the Wing (BMW?) is the ultimate bike for two! GO FOR IT!

I rode with a guy on an 1800 once. We went to the Rock Store in CA. He was throwing sparks everywhere! He LIVED right off of Mulholland so he knew the canyon roads REALLY WELL. I had to pick up my pace! I was still right up his ass on a rented VFR-800 though... so was the guy on the BMW... we all had a lot of FUN!

FWIW, here's what I didn't like about the 'Wing:
Not enough breeze. Sounds wierd, but with gear on, I just don't get enough air. With the windshield in the full down, my head get's buffeted. Maybe an aftermarket w/s would help.
Why isn't the w/s power adjusted?! Doesn't Honda realize how hard it is to adjust this thing when going 80 down the highway?
The stock seat doesn't fit me right. It kept giving me a wedgie. Maybe you need to go commando to ride these?
$600 for the factory CD player?! Are they nut's? But I suppose if your spending $14k, what's another $600 between friends.
Aside from these minor issues, it's a fun bike to ride. Handles well enough, and the electronic cruise control is the shit!
Good Luck

Be careful for the frame welds on the GL 1800. Honda recalled almost all of them to get it updates/checked out. A little scary to have your bike break in half on you at any speed???

There are a few issues with the 1st 1800's but I would think they would have them sorted out, if he's looking at new ones.
Another thing is some of the 1st 1800's overheated if you did a lot of parade style stuff... (yawn)

They make more crap for adjusting how the air gets to you on all the goldwings then for any other bikes I've ever owned. windhields with directional vents in the high pressure areas, wind wings that can point air at your crotch or passenger or whatever. ... heat redirects if you want heat in the winter, you name it...

As far as the sound, I don' t like the way they sound stock either... But then again I don't like the way a gsxr sounds stock. I'd get an an aftermarket pipe for it
Mustang makes one. I know cervini made a center pipe for mine that made it sound better... and picked up a couple of ponys,(don't expect the old Kawie 1000 kerker sound)... there is a sound clip of someone who put one on their bike floating around the net somewhere.

Seating dunno... thats another deal...its almost like religion to these guys, corbin makes one... one company even makes one called the road sofa everyone says theirs is best. I still have a stock one from a 2000 on my 93.

price of factory accessories yeah...I'd probably be using the supplied accessory jack and an mp3 player instead of a cd changer anyway.. there are some online places that sell the factory stuff cheaper but its still big $$$.. cb can be fun on long trips... Truckers are a funny bunch.

If I got one, I'd pick up a backrest, some highway pegs, a pipe maybe a windshield if the stocker didn't work out...and start putting big miles on it , can't do it this year...2005.. 2006 maybe ... dunno.

I would seriously look at FJR. The Wings always remind me of a bus. Are you getting into touring? I keep looking at the flat black Interceptor I saw at the show in Feb. Can you think Blackbird?
Agreed that goldwings aren't very neat looking at all. Cool factor =0
they don't really have to be low milage to be decent though....lots of folks got over 100k on them. I"ve got 70k on mine.

The neat thing about having multiple bikes is
you don't have to compromise... one touring bike 1 zoomy bike
and you can make the fast bike as wicked fast as you want and it really doesn't matter if its not comfortable for the long runs.

I remember the exact moment I decided on a Wing

About a month before I was starting off on vacation on my fj1100 , riding along with a guy on a wing. At the time the fj was one of the bikes with the most neutral seating position bla bla bla.

After about 3 hours on the highway... feet on the pegs ... feet on the back pegs... leaning on the tank bag...other arm leaning on the tank bag.. my back was getting progressivly more sore...
(I've got some back problems)

I"m looking over at the guy on the wing.... he's leaned back on the backrest, cruise control on. Hes listening to the radio and then lights up a smoke .. looking like he just got on the bike 10 minutes ago..... for some reason.. that was just pissing me off. and that was what finally did it for me.
My other buddie still has the fj... I"m on my 2nd wing.. hopefully a 3rd in a year or so.

Its still fun to take out a zoomy bike when you're feeling a little wild though.

What about a BMW 1150RT? More sporty than a Wing, but all the amenities. Down a little on power, but quite comfy, and built for the long haul.

You don't want a wing Ken......even my skinny, 150lb ass didn't like the cramped front seating........you be better served by a BMW k1200lt. It's much more comfy and the electronic windscreen is fun to play with while moving.
