harley guys...need help

got a guy i know with an older 50's or 60's harley...need a mechanic that can help him get the thing running...anyone know of someone in the area of schaumburg that might be able to assist in this?he is looking to do a restoration on it i believe, but people wanna rack him over the coals to work on it, when its a simple bike to work on...he just doesnt have the time for doing it himself...help a brother out...lol

...plus my gf was with me saying "omg slow down, slow down" and I was thinking "Lose annoying squalk box in passenger seat, afford more mods and have less weight in the car and on the back of the bike"...so i dumped her and I'm single again as usual...HERE KITTY KITTY!!!

dealer will be expensive for a restoration. Your going to want to find and independant shop for this, or someone like sloroll who knows more than anyone needs too about old bikes, who may take the project on as a side job.

A guy who uised to work for me used to rave about this shop, and he has built a few bikes for him.

Harley dealers are notoriously overpriced (think other dealerships are bad). They can work on it but it will cost a pretty penny. Good thing is that parts shouldn't be TOO hard to come by.

But in the Schaumburg area you probably won't find an inexpensive shop. They have all the rich folks on Harleys and customs to work with.

Most Harley dealerships won't touch anything older than a '97.

He's either gonna have to find an independent shop or do it himself. And he should expect to pay for their time. Projects such as this are neither simple nor quick - searching for parts alone is a full-time endeavor.

of course not taking it to a stealership...not a chance in hell...

he really needs someone who would assist in the restoration of the bike as it is that old...i dont know what the guy is personally able to do, but he is looking for either a small shop or a guy who is not afraid to take on a side job to work on this...i talked to jdm motorsports in streamwood and mark is unable to take this under his wing, and not really familiar with older bikes like this...there has to be someone in the general area that would be willing to help out on this, i just need to find them...

...plus my gf was with me saying "omg slow down, slow down" and I was thinking "Lose annoying squalk box in passenger seat, afford more mods and have less weight in the car and on the back of the bike"...so i dumped her and I'm single again as usual...HERE KITTY KITTY!!!

Richard "Gus" Gans Engineering mite take it on.

The thing is, if the guy is looking to do the restoration, is he looking to do it himself or have someone restore it for him. This is a big project, and parts are not readily available. The way we work it at the shop because we have had so many problems with people complaining about parts, and how long it takes to get parts is we have "THE CUSTOMER" get his/her own parts. We will tell you what you need and you chase them. If you want us to chase parts, you will pay for the time it takes to find them. 60 bucks an hour is the going rate on motorcycle labor these days. And I think thats even on the cheep side.

I guess that would be him. He must be too busy working on other bikes to work on his own.

Don't assume because it's an "older" Harley it's easy to work on...older bikes can be a bitch to square up and very taxing on ones patience (but well worth it IMO).

Very astute and correct observation, my friend. BTW, if your friend gets fed up and wants to dump it, call me.

We haven't heard much from old Thunderstruck about the old 45 degree push rod aircoolded V-twin, most likely XLCH. I wonder what the dillio is.

HDTony is right on Mick (his real name is Michael, his wife Lori workes there too) from his shop South Side V twin is an a++++ shop. They used to manage Oak Lawn harley for a long time, then opened their own shop. They used to live down the bike from me, and my niece and their daughter are best friends. Even without that, they are a very good reputable shop.
