Not good.
We need self destruct charges on these things. You know China is bidding on that thing right now.

Meh...part of combat. It's understood that when you use weaponry on the battlefield, you're destined to lose it at some point to the enemy.

Unless it's so advanced that it's a must conceal, it's part of the process. That's why the BAR, which originally was designed and manufactured during WWI, did not see combat in any real form until 25 years later in WWII.

Couple things:

1. The Iranians are claiming they "hacked" the drone and were able to remove control from the US. If this is true, then a self-destruct mechanism wouldn't be any good since the Iranians would have control.
2. The RQ-170 is just a surveillance drone, so it most likely doesn't have the cutting edge stuff on it.

the current class of high altitude low observable drones are cutting edge - like double top secret style cutting edge. the idea of a bunch of Iranians sitting at a WWII era anti aircraft battery detecting and then "hacking" into the control system of a UAV is laughable at best.

The US was worried about dropping Fat Man over Germany in case it didn't go off the Germans would have an intelligence coup.

I agree, I doubt the Iranians were able to hack into the software.

However, the low-observability (stealth) of the craft gives the Iranians a test-bed to use with their radar systems to see what they can do to make other stealth aircraft more visible.

There are also pretty high tech cameras and radios on that thing, other good stuff for the enemy to have.

Japan and Japanese!!

...and they had a significant back up plan in place just in case that very thing happened, which of course it didn't.

That said, nuclear technology was then and remains today among the very highest level of classified information. A nuclear weapon is quite a bit different than a recon drone...despite the technology that is in fact in the recon drone.

It's no different that the U-2 shot down over Russia or any other high tech military weapon that falls on enemy ground. It's part of the process, and is a risk that's perfectly understood and best mitigated when the weapon system is implemented.

It's not great of course, but I don't think it's quite as big an issue as some are making it out to be....02

the Iranians can't do much with it (especially if it's inoperable) and they know it. they'll sell to the highest bidder.

I was merely stating what the Iranians are claiming, but it is pretty interesting that the Iranians possess an almost undamaged one of these drones.

The US is claiming they simply lost control. With a mechanical failure, I would guess that the drones have a way to glide to a safe area, which would explain why it's in good condition.

And by not cutting edge, I was referring to no weapons are on board. Surveillance stuff is cool and all, but without access to the satellites, it doesn't do you much good.

***Conspiracy Theory Time***

The Russians or Chinese, probably the only two countries capable of hacking one of these is involved. Iran doesn't really have much to gain from having the US drone technology, but Russia and China do.

besides the point, but how do you know there were no weapons on board?
why would having weapons on board make it more cutting edge?

Many drones and combat bots have self destruct capability, either automatically or remotely. You would have to think that something like this would have such technology embedded in it...if not the aircraft as a whole, the sensitive equipment it carries. You certainly could automate sensors to know when they've lost contact with remote ground control and no longer have any altitude...poof, components are kaput.

RQ = No Weapons.

And wait, why is it so unbelievable that Iran wouldn't be able to do as they were claiming?
