Finally, some practical, common sense ideas

Newt Gingrich promises to build a moon colony by 2020; make it a U.S. state (MSNBC)

The plan is bold, but it could run afoul of international treaties
The race for the Republican presidential nomination is about to blast off into outer space: Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich announced that, if elected, he'd establish a colony on the moon by 2020.

In a speech to supporters on the Florida space coast, Gingrich called for a "grandiose" effort to colonize space. "It's the second great launch of the adventure John F. Kennedy started," said Gingrich.

Gingrich opened up the possibility of the moon becoming the 51st state, something he believes could happen once a permanent settlement reaches a population of 13,000 Americans. While a 1967 United Nations document says that no one country can claim sovereignty over the moon, the U.S., Russia, and China failed to sign a more recent U.N. treaty to settle the question of who owns the moon.

The bold move hopes to boost the former speaker's presidential campaign in the Sunshine State, where space exploration remains a big industry. Florida will hold its GOP presidential primary vote on Tuesday, January 31. Polls show the race is close.

I'm all for an expansion of the space program...at least it's tangible tax expense that reaps real technological and scientific rewards!

The slashing of the space program under the current administration is one of my big issues with it. I'm all for a renewed dedication to space exploration. 'Atta boy Newt!

Does he realize that if you spend enough time in Space ... you can never come back to Earth? The longer you spend in space the less dense your bones become and if you came back after say 12 months in space you would need rehab just to walk again... and thats if you are in good health when you got back. So if you were to spend a few years in space ... yea it wouldn't go so well for ya.

I think a better prospect would be exploring the oceans that we still haven't explored all of ... our budget for marine bio is a tiny percentage of the NASA budget, and its on our own earth.

Fuck all this shit. Give me a candidate who is going to legalize prostitution, there's some real common sense for ya.

"includes 10 used-car dealers or auto repair shops, 11 liquor stores and bars--two of which advertise lingerie fashion shows and a third billed as a "gentlemen's club"--three cut-rate motels and one trailer park. The squat, brick municipal building is next to a currency exchange and a few steps from an adult video store. The bars open at 10 a.m. and close at 6:30 a.m."

The Moon isn't space, but at 1/6th Earths gravity, I don't think that's enough to mitigate the body turning into a boneless blob over time (LOL).

That said, I a agree that we should explore underwater. It's truly our last frontier on the planet, and I have a feeling we have so much more to discover.

I don't believe now is the right time to invest in space exploration.

Yes, there were many good things that came about, but the current ROI is not worth it.

Rather than space exploration, I'd rather see them pump some serious cash into achieving anti-gravity. I'm not joking. The divendends it would pay, the new industries it would create, the better for the environment things would be, the easier space exploration would become. Ok that is my last hit on this bong, I swear.

The grip on the moon road course would be not so good. I'll stay on earth.

Really? Over 100 Million in the US living under the Poverty level, nearly 9% unemployment (yes, I know that these two are directly related) and we want to go to back to the moon again?

Craig

Government's view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it.

There are people lined up for long term space exploration. There have been people vying to get in to the Mars mission program for years. There would be no issue whatsoever with getting volunteers.

...go ask the Russian how difficult it is to stay in space for really long stints. It's not new.

This always cracks me up. The two issues are completely and utterly mutually exclusive. The amount of money that is absolutely poured in to safety net programs that benefit the poor, in to jobless benefits, in to government programs aimed at generating jobs so overwhelmingly towers over the comparatively tiny amount that funds the space program it's laughable to insinuate that diverting those funds in to that black hole would make a difference. (sorry for the run-on )

Many would argue that a huge percentage of the safety net program funding is simply flushed down the toilet. There's almost literally not a single technology that we use today that isn't rooted in some fashion on Aero and space exploration.

ROI? Man I'd love to go down that road with you

Tom

yup, ron paul wants America to be a 3rd world country, instead of bringing us to the most technological country.
