May 18th, Friday night of the summit will be chaos. G8, NATO, Cubs vs White Sox game (1:20pm), plus the typical Friday night rush back into the city.

I'm staying home that whole day.

be prepared...

Chicago Police Dept and other Fed agencies are getting the game plan in action, that includes blocking off whole sections of the Loop and restricted access areas. If things start to heat up, there will be serious non lethal force, mass plastic handcuffing, and $1000 fines for resisting arrest. If protesters try to breach Police lines, there are going to be some excellent beat downs. Cook County lockup for a week, as processing might get a bit jammed up and "go slow", those that get arrested will not be able to join back, due process Chicago style. It's not going to be a repeat of Seattle. I'm actually looking forward to the drama.

Perhaps it was the result of anxiety?

Oh yeah, tons of fun. Certain business near that area require all staff to go through background checks. There are even plans in place for lock downs. Fun....

It's one thing to get locked up in Seattle but it's a completely different animal in Cook County. I foresee an extremely high pucker factor in the lock up.

And a majority of the nutjobs are ron paul followers. Ron Paul is gonna stop all the wars and remove all the US military bases on foreign land. Ron Paul also saw the economy was getting bad, when it ws getting bad, so they claim he is a prophet too.

It's expected to be chaos for more reasons than the protests...they expect the gangs to run wild and crime to soar because the cops will be so busy...An un-named CPD officer has confided to me that by the time the shit hits in May the force will be down another 20% because so many officers are pissed and are going to retire...some even months short just so they don't have to deal with it. They are already severely short handed! The rank & file of CPD are extremely pissed about alot of things the new mayor has done and hope this shit will be his undoing! They hate that he felt he could pull this off without even consulting them and they totally hate the New Jersey Comissioner even more than J-Fed!
My advice...If you have guns...keep 'em loaded and handy because response time in the neighborhoods will run into hours! Especially in the nicer outlying areas that will have police coverage cut to the bone.
If this happens as predicted to me...well... it's too bad we don't have recall in Illinois!
The State police don't have enough personel to provide coverage and the Cook County Sheriff's police don't have the personel, equipment or training to make a difference, I'm told! I sincerely hope this is bullshit but I fear it's not. We may see the National guard providing law enforcement in Chicago this Spring!

"Dirt is for racing on...Asphalt is for getting there" OR "Flat trackers go in deeper and come out harder... OR (With apologies to General MaCarthur) "Old motorcycle racers never die, they just slip off the groove and fade into the dust!

Mostly the cops acknowledge their pensions are the next target. Lots of press now about this 800 lb gorilla. Any deal with teachers or non-safety public workers at this point will spell disaster for police and fire pensions and they know it. I bet any Madison style protests at this point will have stronger support from the state troopers and local police.

Police departments from accross the country provide staff for these type of events, this is nothing new or unique to Chicago.

The CPD and CFD were untouchable under Daley and they still bitched b/c their contracts took a while to be negotiated. Every other union and non union city worker (except the elected ones) took a hit in the wallet, maybe now it is the turn for the CPD and CFD to do the same.

I am not saying that the city is not mismanaged, but until the same types of people quit getting elected, nothing will change.

Tell me about it. I didn't get a raise from Sept 11th, 2001 until I left in 2008. Plus I had to take unpaid days and actually show up for work on those days. I worked as civilian support for police and health. The health role was in bioterrorism prevention but that still didn't qualify.

The bottom line though is the state and local govts didn't put enough $$ into the pension funds and now we have a big hole. That move wasn't unintentional for sure and now the hole is too big to climb out of so the only solution is to give the policy makers what they want: Pension reform.

I'm not saying it isn't needed but there will be consequences.

Ummm...I don't think so. This falls entirely on CPD. There is no way any department in another jurisdiction is going to order their personel into a situation like this. The liability to their personel would just be too great...You think the Cleveland or DesMoines (or wherever) PD's are going to want cover their officers if they are permanantly disabled in an incident when deployed in Chicago? AND... there's NO WAY the CPD or the City is going to deploy personel into a situation like G8 that they are not entirely sure have been trained in their tactics and policies and that they would not have complete control of and jurisdiction over in the event of after the fact litigation or liability.
The only exceptions are the world leaders will have their own Secret Service type security and under reciprocity agreements Suburban departments may be asked to handle neighborhood calls near their borders with the city...ask a district commander how he feels about a Suburban cop handling calls in his district! It's a fiasco that the mayor and his comissioners are downplaying and have a complicent news media helping them. They're either hoping they get by or they want all hell to break loose to justify more restrictive government mandates! What was that the mayor said in his last job?..."Never let a disaster go to waste..."

"Dirt is for racing on...Asphalt is for getting there" OR "Flat trackers go in deeper and come out harder... OR (With apologies to General MaCarthur) "Old motorcycle racers never die, they just slip off the groove and fade into the dust!
