U.S. announces diplomatic breakthrough with North Korea

Quote:
Under an agreement reached in direct talks in Beijing last week, North Korea has agreed to allow the return of nuclear inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency, and has agreed to implement a moratorium on long-range missile tests, nuclear tests, and nuclear activities at Yongbyon, including uranium enrichment activities, the State Department said. In return, the United States will provide North Korea with a large food aid package.

Pretty much. That [email protected] government should have been spending its nuke-research money on feeding its people. Now they have a nuke and we are going to help feed their people.

What are the alternatives, though? The PDRK is now looking like Oliver to the world, asking for help to feed its poor starving nation. If the world says 'no' then we look like a bunch of heartless bastards. We say 'yes' and we look good, but PDRK wins in the end.

I was going to ask Tony the same thing. What could have been done differently?

Threaten them with economic sanctions? They are already trading almost solely with China. Military action? That would be a big mistake, we were at war on 2 other fronts. If the PDRK wanted to invade the ROK they'd make it halfway to Pusan before being stopped. Seoul would fall and we'd likely lose 10,000 American lives, not to mention the huge civilian casualties.

Their military couldn't support such an attack, you say? Hardly, that's what they train for constantly and they would have the support of the Chinese. Remember history.

So what could have been done differently?

Give 0 aid. It will be used as propaganda by the ruling party to further their agenda.

We should've banned Clinton and Carter from going there.

BTW, we still have a chance of doing this now that the great general is dead. However, it will be a long term commitment.

Need to put more pressure on NK's trading partners like China and Russia. Smoke em out..so to speak.

Not much we can do but ignore them, no reason to give them aid, it won't get us anything in return. we can't afford to be the worlds welfare system anymore.

Considering you have a very good ally on that peninsula and a lot of US troops stationed there, are you still ok with a nuclearized (spell?) peninsula? Not to foget about Japan as well.

I'm not sure what giving them aid now does to deter what they will do. Historically it hasn't done a thing.

We tried to pander to them with aid to get them to stop their development They took our aid and still went ahead and developed the tech and the nukes. They basically developed their Nuke program on our dime. They still had lots of people starve to death even with the aid.

At this point in time and really any point in time since the North went to war with the South the North can and could still invade the South. The nuke program doesn't change that.

Now they have nukes. If they used nukes against the South at this point what would our response be? Would we get into a ground war with them if they used nukes? We'd most likely retaliate with nukes of our own.

So I don't see the aid as doing any good. While we are providing aid and feeding their starving masses they will not be working to improve their abilities to support their own people. They have never done this in the past. It will only allow them to spend resources in expanding military capabilities further while we are feeding their masses. Again. Once again they will build their military capabilites on our dime.

The only way I see this doing any good is if we trade them. Food and aid for tanks, nukes, missles and guns. Disarm them. They give us the Nukes missles tanks guns prior to any aid.
We have not learned from history here. Heck, we have not learned from real recent history at that

The aid will be delivered when the DPRK allow the IAEA inspectors back in after kicking them out 3 years ago. They install cameras, monitors, etc in addition to being on site. That is what giving them aid will gain us. There are also requirements that we get monitors in there to assure that the aid is going to those who need it. Corruption exists everywhere, so I doubt there will be zero, but it would be more eyes and ears on the ground if we can do that.

If you ain't with us, then it's just bad news.

Yes I know that inspectors will be in. I'm all for that. Having the inspectors in will stop it only during the period of time that they are there. In the past they agreed to not develop nukes in exchange for aid. They still went ahead and developed the nukes. So history tells us that it will not deter their plans.

Yeah, I agree and I am not under the impression that it will directly deter their plans. If they have a facility that they don't list and don't allow access, what good does it do? But, I guess inspectors in the country are better than none. I guess the question is then is it worth the price? I am not sure if it is.

what do inspectors have to do with anything. I'm sure they will be shown around the country and invited to sites where they used to work on Nukes, I'm sure all that stuff has been moved to a new location. what bothers me is the blind trust, some of you, have in this "system".

I don't believe in in for a second, it's flawed and we've seen it all before.

I'd rather see us give Aid to Cuba. at least we'd get cigars and hot woman out of the deal
