Death Row Prisoners are the Stars of Chinese Hit TV Show

* Before you read on and post in this thread please refrain from racist comments, lets have a cordial discussion about this topic *

I remember one of the funniest George Carlin (RIP) bits was about public execution (brought you by Crisco), I think some of you might be familiar. It made for a good laugh, but I guess it is now TV reality.

http://bigthink.com/think-tank/the-e...chinese-tv-hit

Minutes before they're executed, China's death row inmates get their 15 minutes in the spotlight on prime time television. Their public confessions are documented in a popular Chinese talk show, Interviews Before Execution, and now excerpts from the hit show will be featured in a documentary on the BBC, according to The Daily Mail.

The prim and pretty host of the show, Ding Yu, has been interviewing death row inmates for the past five years and the show's success has brought her instant fame. Inmates who end up on the show typically confess their crimes in an interview with Yu - sometimes in the presence of the inmate's family members - apologize profusely and are then carried away to be executed.

What is the Significance?

The aim of Interviews Before Execution is to "inform and educate according to government policy." This goal is carried out by the show's judiciary committee that selects offenders with crimes that are suitable for "educating the public." They are careful to avoid cases that might involve political elements.

But now that clips from the show are in a BBC documentary, Chinese television executives are concerned about damage to the "countryís image overseas and lead to fresh accusations of human rights abuses," according to The Daily Mail report. Ding and her colleagues have been instructed to give limited access to the BBC and are forbidden to conduct interviews with the foreign press.

Ding denies the exploitative nature of the show and insists that the inmates want to be heard.

"When I am face-to-face with them I feel sorry and regretful for them. But I donít sympathize with them, for they should pay a heavy price for their wrongdoing. They deserve it."

What do you think? When death row inmates appear on national television, is the media creating opportunities for them to be heard? Or is the media exploiting these inmates?

I think its exploitative. Interview them for educational purposes, but not for entertainment purposes. Have trained researchers conduct the surveys.

Yea, the fact that it is a TV show host interviewing people leans the scale more to spectacle than educational. I am really not too familiar with Chinese TV, I have watched some Korean and some Japanese shows. Not sure how this will fit in the TV landscape.

I don't really see anything wrong with it, as long as it's the inmates decision whether or not they wanted to be interviewed.

I've been saying for many years on CLSB that we need to have public stoning for violent criminals.

It will deter future criminals

Raise funds for the government, charge $5 per stone

And can be a family event -- bring the kids!

You better be nice to America or we will bring democracy to your country.

Put that shit on Pay-per-view and use the profits towards paying off the shit ton of money it cost to put the person through the process.

Or my personal favorite. Verdict comes in....guilty. Bailiff, please take the prisoner out back and put one in his forehead.

An interview is great and all. But I think I speak for all dead men walking when I say, I'd prefer steak and a bj.

"includes 10 used-car dealers or auto repair shops, 11 liquor stores and bars--two of which advertise lingerie fashion shows and a third billed as a "gentlemen's club"--three cut-rate motels and one trailer park. The squat, brick municipal building is next to a currency exchange and a few steps from an adult video store. The bars open at 10 a.m. and close at 6:30 a.m."

These have to be highly edited. What if some political dissident wanted to start talking shit against the Chinese gov., what are they going to do? Kill him? Guess they could always take it out on his family but this whole thing as "example" written all over it. Sounds like something you would see in North Korea.
Imagine if this show has the opposite effect? Instead of keeping people from getting into trouble people start committing crimes for their 15 mins of fame. Sounds dumb but I can see someone with a screw or two loose doing this.

I think it's fucked up that people just want to "be famous" ..... they want their 15 mins ( or seconds ) and it doesn't seem to matter what they get famous for.

Albert Einstein is famous

Neil Armstrong is famous

So is Paris Hilton

People seem to think that being on Jerry Springer is a *good thing*

I think it's fucked up that enough people bother to watch that kind of socially and spiritually worthless drivel that it draws sponsorship.

I think they admit is highly edited and no political prisoners ever. The British are going to do a documentary on it and the Chinese gov is concerned about how that will be portrayed.

On a serious note, this seems like pure propaganda with the purpose of creating the perception that government is right and just and everyone in prison is guilty. The only purpose of this show is to draw attention away from unlawful inprisonment of people who committed no crime or spoke out against the government.

Yea, I think is pretty obvious. China as a government has always scared me. I think it is more morbid than interesting for my taste.

I am guessing, but I am sure they do this to help their family, not hurt them. And I am sure they select the right people to do this nor would they air it otherwise. Can't be the "normal" live broadcast, there is a long delay built in I am sure.

If you ain't with us, then it's just bad news.

I think it's a great idea, especially if they ADMIT to the crimes they did. I hate the fact they stopped doing executions in this state

...plus my gf was with me saying "omg slow down, slow down" and I was thinking "Lose annoying squalk box in passenger seat, afford more mods and have less weight in the car and on the back of the bike"...so i dumped her and I'm single again as usual...HERE KITTY KITTY!!!
