Pastor's solution, stay classy NC

Wow.......... So much for loving your neighbor.
And this is why the separation of church and state was written in.

Pastor delivers anti-gay rant, suggests building electric fence around ‘queers and homosexuals’

I'm glad to see the word "queer" is making a comeback, I feel it's under utilized.

Example: "This guy protests too much, I think he might be a queer"

Doesn't matter. We'll be behind the fence. We'll fix up the neighborhood, start a lot of successful and cute small businesses, create a cohesive and tolerant community, improve the education of our kids, raise property values. And then all the young straight families will want to buy their way in.

Just like:
Old Town
Lincoln park
Lakeview
Edgewater
and currently, Rogers Park.

And we are fully capable of making babies, we generally choose not to. There's a big difference between Can't Won't Don't and doing what's necessary.

And what will he do about all the straight couples that keep having gay babies?

he obviously doesn't have a clue. I vote closet case.

Yea, yesterday I think. Tell-a-queen is faster than this beeb.

Seems like I've heard this before. Long time ago. Some guy named Hitler.

I wonder what day he has penciled in for Kristallnacht? November 9th-10th?

FWIW - I can't stand crap like this coming from the Christian community.

It seems at the moment that I am angrier than Craig. This guy gives Christians a black eye. This is NOT representative of the Christian sentiments to love your neighbor as (or above) yourself.

You were born about 60 years too late. Hitler beat you to it. Kristallnacht was in 1938. He got the Jews, the Gypsys, the Gays, and anyone else he didn't like. Managed to torture and kill most of them, too.

And of course our own freedom-loving US government put all the Japanese behind the fences once as well.

Brian,

I don't get that mad about stupid like this anymore. I've heard it too often in the present and past for it to have much effect on me. I only mobilize if I think that he actually might have the power to pull it off.

Assess the threat, mobilize only to the extent needed to neutralize the threat. Don't waste resources or energy.

Phila is cool. Eros would be creepy.

^^While remaining indefensible really, those two are far, FAAAAAR apart of course. It was panic in the streets really that caused things to go that direction. The apprehension of Japanese spies in Hawaii that were relaying information back to Japan prior to Dec 7th quite literally caused all out panic on the West coast after the attack, throughout California. They thought a full on invasion was imminent (heck, it actually happened in Alaska).

The Japanese were singled out, largely of course because they were easier to single out...but make no mistake, Germans were detained as well. Not anywhere near in the same numbers, but they were.

Just clarifying (and jumping on any excuse to talk WWII!)

Of course the causes and motivations were different. The fear and prejudice, however, was not.

The German government expressly orchestrated the start of the Holocaust starting with 'the night of broken glass" November 9-10, 1938. The Germans let the roughly 30,000 Jewish men arrested and interred on those dates go over the next three months, except for the 91 who died those nights and the ~2,500 who died in the camps. The "Final Solution" and final removal came later.

The American government expressly orchestrated the interment of US citizens of Japanese descent. We kept these US citizens in the camps through the war.
Like the Germans, we confiscated their property and possessions. We took everything from them.

We detained Germans, but didn't remove all US Citizens of German descent east of the Allegheny Mountains to camps. And there were more German incursions on the east coast of the mainland than there were Japanese incursions on the west coast of the mainland during the war.

The only thing we did different is that we didn't torture or intentionally kill them. A big difference, yes. But as you say, both actions are indefensible.

YES! More WWII discussion...I'll go allllll night.

...and I would argue that the fear and prejudice was QUITE different between the two. I mean really. On one side you have a panic gripped nation that had just suffered a devastating surprise attack and reacted out of fear more than prejudice (had the Japanese been detained before or after the war I would understand the point of prejudice)...the German side had little to do with "fear or prejudice"...at least any fear of the people that were being "picked up" by the Gestapo. The fear was of the Gestapo themselves. As you're aware, most people in Germany had no idea the concentration camps even existed. My Grandfather was there when they discovered Buchenwald (I think it was Buchenwald)...they made the locals walk the camps and help mitigate the areas so they would actually believe what was said to have been done there.

Big big big BIG difference between the two...and if you think the US was the only place such camps existed you're kidding yourself

Tom,

I understand your points, but to my mind, fear and prejudice are always just that, fear and prejudice. No matter what the situation.

In Germany, The Nazi Party whipped up prejudice against Jews, blaming them for all the countries woes and economic problems, which they did not cause and were not responsible for. The shooting of vom Rath in Paris the evening of the 9th November, 1938 by an expat of Jewish descent was the trigger. The impetus for the government was economic, as they wanted the assets to build their war machine.

There was nothing to justify the government's response (to send out the Gauleiters, the SA, and the SS) to destroy German Jewish owned businesses and community assets such as synagogues.

In the US, the country of Japan attacked Pearl Harbor in Hawaii, which at that time was a US Possession (as was Alaska, kind of like Guam and Puerto Rico are today). There was no hard evidence of an imminent danger to the US Mainland from US Citizen Japanese people as a whole. However again, fear and prejudice based on cultural ignorance and widespread fear-mongering in the press led to the interment. Our governments response was to give in to that fear and round up US Citizens and put them in camps.

Motivations were different. The German government wanted to seize assets and use them to build a war machine. The US government gave into fear and loathing by the ignorant public, which was fanned by media sensationalism (check out William Randolph Hearst and Yellow Journalism). Both led to inexcusable exercises of fear and prejudice which caused many innocents great suffering and loss.

As far as what other countries did - How does that justify any wrong? Everybody's doing it is never a good reason.

Craig
