100 Million Americans Without Jobs

This doesn't look too good...

Quote:
Business Insider - The national unemployment rates gets lots of attention, and lately more attention has been paid to the workforce participation rate since more Americans have given up looking for a job, but we can also see that an astounding 100 million Americans donít have jobs.

Specifically, these are people who are part of the civilian over-16 non-institutional population who are either unemployed or not part of the workforce. According to the April jobs report, the number of jobless American stood at 100.9 million.

Thatís an all-time record and itís an increase of 26.2 million over the last 12 years. Itís as if we absorbed the entire adult population of Canada and not a single person had a job.

The numbers are staggering. The jobs-to-population ratio peaked 12 years ago. If we were to have the same ratio today, we would need 15.3 million more jobs, or 23.7 million fewer people.

The unemployment rate is intentionally deceiving. The Prez will be ousted in a landslide in a few months time.

It's all Bush fault.

And your numbers are exaggerated, MoveOn.org says everything is fine. You read the wrong info form the wrong sources about the wrong topics. Get with it, man! Sheesh

Sarcasm aside, do you think that's a reasonable estimate?

It's about 1/3 of the population

Romney is up 6 points in Florida and Obama continues to struggle in the Primaries:

http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0512/76656.html

I mean look at those numbers...once again a large portion of the Democrat voting block is checking "other" when Obama has no opponent...when he does have an opponent he's been losing 35-45% of the vote to them. That's staggering for an incumbent.

Landslide.

Okie Doke...they're not polls. They're cast ballots.

And the polls I do reference are traditionally extremely important. As I mentioned before, an incumbent is considered in trouble if they're even LEVEL with the challenger at this stage. Momentum always builds with a challenger...the sitting President traditionally has a big advantage in polling early on, those numbers tend to fade as the election nears.

This is statistical fact, not my opinion...sure nothing is set in stone, but playing the odds the President is in deep trouble at this point.

2010 is going to be blown out of the water.

Honestly, how in the world can you guys think that? Other than just saying "Obama will win" and "this" how about some back up gents Where are you seeing any indication that the President is in calm waters here? At every turn it's bad news for the administration.

Swing States are where the elections are won and lost. Swing States are where he's in the most trouble at present. There's a reason the Convention was scheduled in NC...they've all but conceded defeat there already. Florida is another very important State...very bad news coming from there now.

Carville was right....

Just wait, there's still plenty of time for the Republican Party to shoot themselves in the foot, such as naming Sarah Palin as VP again

Ha, it's going to be Rubio or Ryan. Both are a slam dunk.

I've been saying all along that all the Republicans have to do is sit back, shut up and watch the Administration implode. It's been working like a charm the past few weeks already

I think you are putting too much faith in logic and common sense when it comes to how and why people vote one way or another.

As much as I want to agree with you and hope that you are correct, my gut tends to tell me not to get my hopes up. I'll do my part, you'll do your part, a few others will too, but then we live in IL and it really does not matter.

That's the key right there and I have little faith that that is what will happen.

Yes.

And there is a large population that are near retirement age that have no desire to work any more due to the shitty economy. Not many places are hiring people 55+.

I think there is a VERY large silent majority at play here...2010 showed that, and that was just a midterm. I have a feeling...just a feeling here, that it's going to be a giant pantsing in Nov. I hope

I think its the opposite. Many senior citizens want to get back into the work force because their 401Ks/IRAs have been destroyed and they don't have enough for retirement.

Yep, they used to count everyone who wasn't working between the ages of 21 and 65. The formula was adjusted many times between 1920 and 1980 to reflect changes int eh workforce, like the growing number of women in teh workforce.

Back in the early 1980's the then current formula, which counted everyone considered part of the workforce who wan not working made the unemployment rate look real bad (over 8%). So the Labor Department, under President Reagan at the time, changed the formula and wa la, the unemployment rate was under 5%. Ever since we only count as unemployed those who are registered with the local Jobs Agency (unemployment office) as looking for work, whether or not they are receiving unemployment compensation.

It's a screwed up formula, but it has helped every politician ignore the increasing problem of unemployment/underemployment since.

A better measure would be to count:

Everyone over 18 and under 70 who meets all of these criteria:
Is a US Citizen or legal permanent resident or has a valid work visa (no inclusion of illegal workers)
Is not a full-time student
Is not disabled (temporary or permanent)
Is not a stay-at-home caregiver by choice
Is not retired

that would make the unemployment rate around 20-25% or so by my guess. Of that number, probably half of them would not qualify for most jobs because of lack of skills, education or proper work habits.

But 100 million is almost 33% of our total population, so I consider that number total BS.

Craig

Hopefully the graph imports, its from the bureau of labor statistics and goes back to 1948. Civilian labor force participation rate, 16 years old and over. The average over all those years is 62.87% with a low of 58.1% and high of 67.3% (in 2000), we are currently at 63.6%.

Just to put it into perspective.

The real number I care about..... is the cost of the non-working. You can have a small number (or percent) of non-working, but a very high cost. Or as I suspect was the case in the 1950's, a large number of non-working, but the cost to the working class was low.

I don't know where to find that study though.
