Are you poor if you own a couple of TVs?

I saw this article this morning and it got me thinking about poor now vs. poor 50 years ago and how different they are.

Basically it says that the majority of poor people (those with incomes below $20k) own at least 2 TVs, cell phones, air conditioning, and a video game console. So conservative groups are saying that the consumption gap between rich and poor is shrinking even as the income gap increases. Liberal groups argue that technology has become so cheap these devices are commonplace, yet the poor has trouble with basics like childcare and transportation.

http://money.cnn.com/2012/08/01/news....htm?hpt=hp_t3

I'm pretty sure I know what the majority of the responses on this conservative board will be, but what do you all think?

This should be entertaining.

I'd hate to make generic statements on the topic. Each situation will be different. What is being put off so that they can afford the two tvs and so on. Is public assistance used to buy or subside these expenses.

My parents raised me and my sister on not much more then 20k a year, and they did not rely on public assistance. We just lived a very modest life. Probably because if my upbringing and not having the nice stuff, now I like treating myself.

Childcare and transportation are exponentially more expensive compared to a used XBox. Apples to oranges. I would think a cheap TV is virtually irrelevant to most people's financial picture.

Haha, I always say that "poor" in this country (in general terms) is basic cable, cell phones without a data plan and window AC.

Everyone's got their hand out.

What if you have Section 8 housing, and a Link card but still drive a 2012 Chrysler 300C with $3k aftermarket wheels?

The people paying for housing and food out of pocket have a 2001 2dr coupe, window AC's, basic cable, and cell phones without data.

But I guess thats a whole different topic, kind of assbackwards IMO

Of course this is CLSB so neither situation works

This ^^^^

To put it in perspective, in 1938 a bedroom radio which most households had, in some form or another, cost $9.95 or 0.6% of annual income.

A cheap TV at $200 is about 1% for a family of 4 at the poverty line. So an XBox is around the same, cell phone (with a cheap monthly plan) not really out of the ordinary.

What we have seen is an exponential increase in wage based expenses. Childcare is really expensive and for a single child could hit 40% of annual income for a family at the poverty line. You can easily spend more in child care than what a second income can bring into a family.

So while inflation and wages of the poverty line have in general matched, the cost of some goods like child-care, vehicles, non-commodity services, has increased much more. The "poor" today are a different kind of poor, where "wants" have become cheap commodity type items, and some "needs" (healthy food) are more luxuries.

It's easier to spend money on cheap crap and get more, than spend alot on high quality and get less.

I had a potential renter ask me if I would work with her XYZ housing assistance program, and then ask if it would be ok if she mounted her flatscreens to the wall. she had four of them.

My wife stays home with my daughter. She was thinking about going back to work last year but after looking at the cost of child care it would have cost us more for her to work.
BTW, 1 TV and no game console. No land line for 10 years until last month. Her cell is through Cricket, mine is a work phone. I try to keep those bills to a minimum so I can eat better food. We have 1 car and I use my bike for 75% of the year to minimize costs.
I have 0 patience for people using gvt funds for bs.

Anybody can have lots of new expensive gadgets and even a new car and be poor. Credit is silly stupid to get in this country now a days. You can have anything if you want to finance to "appear" like your not poor. Fucked up priorities and credit....dangerous combo.

Never, ever get in line at Jewel behind the asshole with 40 gallons of milk, 23 dozen eggs, and 17 bottles of Juicy Juice because you know they will be paying with those fucking WIC vouchers that take forever to ring up. Then you get to watch them haul all the shit out to their late model Cadillac after you pay cash for your groceries and get into your 10 year old pickup truck.

I don't care if you are poor and own these things, because you worked for it.

I want to see WIC program to go extinct. And them to cut link card funds to $60 dollars or less.

You shouldn't have kids if you can't afford them. Especially, 3 of them. And the Link card is heavy abused.

No shit, I understand that some people have cultures of big families but when you come here and no longer have an rural area that needs lots of hands you should adapt to what you can afford. fine line there though as far as rights go, don't want to be like China and control reproductive rights.

Everyone on CLSB knows what a baller you are, 6-figure income, semi-retirement in Florida and you have that awesome Maita to roll around in and a wife that never leaves the kitchen. You obviously don't fall in the sub $20k/year bracket so why are you telling us how many TVs you have?

Back to the true discussion. To TDS's post I think he's got a point: don't have kids if you can't afford them without government assistance. How do you enforce it without becoming like China, then?

I also find it hard to think that those with so many electronic luxuries can't find ways to pay for things the government assists them with.

you let people have as many kids as they want, but you provide no assistance. Let them go to church.

Just like Ryan said, you see "them" getting 10 gallons of milk at once. how the hell do you even drink that much. They are probably selling it to other people.
