I have tremendous respect for teachers.

If increasing their salaries attracts better prospects, so be it.

I only hope that they hire and retain people based on their merits and not just seniority.

We spend so much money on other bullsh*t matters anyway.

You better be nice to America or we will bring democracy to your country.

I have a friend that's a special Ed teacher in a poor district. She buys school supplies every week out of her own pocket because none of the kids have them. She buys resource material with her own money because the school won't (can't) buy it. She only makes 32,000 a year and had two masters degrees. The average public school teacher shells out a good deal of their own pay heck directly to the students.

The life a teacher. Barely a livable wage, spending your own money on other peoples kids, buried under a mountain of student loan debt, but don't worry... We'll balance the budget on the backs of these people rather than get an extra 3% from the rich. Sounds fair.

I could easily get donations for free school material. she she must not be too smart.

And why does she have 2 master degrees teaching special needs kids (no offense to special people). And there are other districts where they pay more than 50,000 to special needs children. Which I think is way too high.

thats not how it works. They have crap ass teachers. Then when the school board says, we are going to get rid of tenure, and determine your wage based on how smart or dumb your kids are after they leave your class. They started crying to the Unions.

some states are already doing this with teachers.

Teachers and pensions is one of the bullshit problems. Private sector is getting rid of pensions and making people get 401k. How do you expect people who retire at 55? that don't teach kids anymore to get a full salary for the next 30 years.

If you're profession is public school teaching, just being employed is an accomplishment. High income district? You must be joking. People don't leave those jobs so they are seldomly available.

The demands of a teacher in a low income district are a completely different animal compared to a more middle class area. And out of the very few jobs open for any teacher, the vast majority are in poor districts.

what does finding a job have to do with teachers going on strike to get more money?

I already know about how hard it is getting a teacher job. They are not building a school everyday. And you have every person that wants to be a teacher. So you can get passed that point.

Cuz we need taxpayer subsidized unions.

If the private sector wants to unionize, do what you will.

Public sector jobs don't need unions. I don't need my taxpayer funds to pay for some union organizer's BMW payment.

The CTU Prez is a joke.

Having respect for teachers and what they do and the situation in Chicago are mutually exclusive. It drives me absolutely crazy that the two have been made equatable...the assertion that just because you're against raises, you're against teachers.

This whole process has made me absolutely sick. Notice that none of these same teachers want a stitch of merit pay structure. Nope, they just demand HUGE pay raises, virtually yearly, while the tax payer coffers go broke...It's actions like this, precisely, that will continue to chase residents from the County, and in so doing reduce even further the available funds to pay the same teachers demanding more money.

A self-fulfilling prophecy really.

"What about the Children!?" That card has been played.

Bingo!!!

Check thechampion.org to see what some of these "teachers" are really making at the taxpayers expense!

I always bring up my high school gym teacher who was pulling 140k 20 years ago...nice gig, a mid cap CEO salary with full benefits and pension for 8 months of work. No wonder they fight so hard for these contracts!

Look, I can appreciate this. I was young too, I felt just like you. Hated authority, hated all my bosses, thought they were full of shit. Look, it's like they say, if you're not a rebel by the age of 20, you got no heart, but if you haven't turned establishment by 30, you've got no brains. Because there are no story-book romances, no fairy-tale endings. So before you run out and change the world, ask yourself, "What do you really want?"

I think that was the point.

All salaries and etc in any public entity are, by law, public record. That means they have to give them to you if you ask, it does not mean they have to make it easy, and certainly does not mean they are required to post them on a website.
Make a FOIA request, with the proper paperwork, to CPS and they'll give you the stuff you asked for.

Starting teachers make very little, because they know very little.
Veteran teachers make a lot more because they've earned it.

It is an unfortunate side affect of our society that;
A- "where" you teach has more to do with how much you make than "how well" you teach;
B- unions (even thought they suck) are necessary to protect the rights of workers;
C- there is no "real" importance placed on elementary education, despite the way the government blusters about it.

I find it so fucked up that many of the schools are so messed up (especially gangs/violence) that good parents have to either move to the burbs or pay 10K per year to ensure their kids have a safe good environment to learn.
A lot has to do with the parents who use public schools as baby sitting services and who put very little value on education. If we put more value on education in general teachers would be making lots of $$ and competition for the jobs would be high.
Funny when you see an American kid bitching at his parents for waking him up for school and showing up late to class and then contrast it with a Chinese kid who stays up for hrs to study to test into a school. Watched a piece on the news that covered Chinese kids trying to get into college. Right after high school the rich family's send their kids to a 2 month educational boot camp that intensely bombards them with test and study. They do all of this to ensure they can pass the test to get into the top colleges. On the test day they showed a sea of kids rushing the schools to test in. It was nuts. Not saying that we should be like the Chinese but they do regard education pretty damn high.

Let them strike. They will be replaced.

Let's clean house out in the burbs too. Too many young, eager, and willing teachers around to let the bad ones survive until their pension is fattened up.

The top 5% should make $200k a year, top 10% 100k, top 25% $75k, top 50% $50k, the rest should find another profession. You would be shocked how opposite this is.

Tom,
The problem is NOT exclusive to Chicago or Cook County. It's just in the news right now because they are dealing with new management that isn't going to kiss their asses like the last administration did. At least not initially.
Teachers in this state and around the country have been coddled so long it's become a matter of course...notice how when the subject is pension reform the teachers pensions are treated differently and even deemed untouchable? Ask any Cop, firefighter or civil engineer how they feel about that?

They knew when going to college and getting their 5th master degree that the chances of them making big bucks as a teacher was going to be slim + they are off 2-3 months outta the year as our neighbors are both teachers and had the whole summer off to smoke weed and drink beer. It would be like complaining that you just got your 2nd MBA and your goal was to be a manager of a local mcdonalds and then bitching that all you make is $30k a year. I respect what teachers do as i could never deal with other peoples kids all day but dont bitch how poor you are when you know that when you put your cock into the gloryhole that its a 50/50 chance that there could be a dude with braces and a beard and bad teeth and epilepsy on the other side of the hole that will tear up your shit!

And with all their smarts still cant make a product that fails less than 30% of the time. What china needs is more education in quality control and SPC!

I just last night went to my 1st graders parent orientation at the school and when the teacher with over 10 yrs of experience was asked specific questions about her teaching methods and cornered she got kinda snotty that a parent would actually question what she was doing as if we are the idiots - they dont even grade the kids homework unless asked to by us - they have a honor system that we get a sheet for each month and the parents are supposed to do the homework with your kid and we as parents check off each task then turn the sheet in at the end of the month, my kid is in the dual language imersion program for spanish english and i know there is going to be some parents that dont give a fuck and will check it off regardless if they do the work. + the chick said she wont have the kids assesed till mid OCtober to see what level they are at and was ambiguous anout the timeline on that - wtf.
