Club 57 GP - Byron Sun 10/6

Hey all,

It's been referenced in a couple other threads, but who all is planning to hit the annual GP race at Byron on 10/6?

I will be there for the 3rd year in a row. Hopefully I will actually be able to last most of the way thru the race as I have actually ridden a few times this year.

It is a really fun, low-key event. They use most of both MX tracks, the flat grass track section up at the top of the hill behind the house, and about a mile or so of single track. 2 30 minute motos. Classes: 250, 450, +30, +45, mini, vintage (drum brake). They don't break it up by A/B/C classes for this event.

BTW Scoot J and Brad came up with a new award for this years race - im gonna get those fawks! nice! if ya havent done the race - do it!

Club 57
BREAKING NEWS
I just received word from the Club 57 promotions department, a new award will be given out at this year’s Club57 Challenge( this Sunday Oct,6)
Re: Byron GP

This year, one unfortunate rider will have the honor of receiving the “Natola Hard Luck Award”.
A whole gamut of excuses, uhh… circumstances, can make one eligible to receive the award.
For example: “Mechanical failure”, or… “I missed my moto because I was in the porta-john with shit-cramps”, or… “I couldn’t race- just had a baby” (lame), and the ever-popular, “wife wouldn’t let me race”.
The winner will receive a warm six-pack of Twisted Tea.
Must be 21 or older to be eligible. Rider need not be present to win.

DO YOU WANT TO BE A BETTER DIRT OR MX RIDER OR LEARN TO RIDE DIRT?

Nice! So Tony, do you want me to pick up the award for you since you will be coming up with another new excuse for not showing up this year?

You know, you talked this race up so much 3 yrs ago, but we haven't seen you there either of the last 2 yrs.

Does anyone have a link with more info? Searching around(club 57, byron, google), all I can really find is that the race is this Sunday and nothing else. Guess all I really need to know are the start times for each class. Thanks!

Typically they have sign up from 7-830. Riders meeting at 830 and practice right after that. For this event they just have everyone go out for one lap of practice together. More like a sighting lap.

They only run a few classes: +30, +45, 250, 450, mini, vintage. There is no a/b/c class split. Each class will run two 30 min motots. They will announce the order of races at the rideds meeting. Depending on the size of the classes and who is running double classes they may combine some classes. Last year +30 &+45 ran together. The ysar before 450 & +30 ran together.

I just checked their site. They got a lot of ran the lasf two days. They cancelled the vet race that was scheduled for toda. No word on tomorrow's gp race yet...

He has a little twitter update screen on the right hand side of his home page at motobyron.com.

He just updated a while ago that it is raining again and he will put out another update on the status of the race this evening.

I would also like to know some general information about the event. I have only been on my bike twice. Can I bring two bikes? Can I share a bike with a friend? How long is the loop? Is it a race?..........

Having only been on your bike twice I'd suggest you get a littkle more experience before entering a GP. This event is a race. It's sanctioned by the AMA and part of the AMA District 17 series and is intended to be a fun event to get everyone, both racer and casual trail rider, out on their bikes and compete in a low pressure event unlike the motocross or Hare Scrambles series.
You would have to ride the bikes you have within the class structure of the event and if the 2 bikes you have run in the same class or race you could only use one. Changing to another bike in a race is not allowed.
You could share a bike by you and your friend entering different classes that are being run in different races. For instance you could enter the 250cc "C" class and your friend could enter 30+ veteran age based class. Something like that as long as it fits.

When the raindate is announced...go spectate. Then get out on your bike and ride. Get experience and gain confidence. Take the Club 57 school or check into one of the other schools that teach off road and dirt racing skills and practice, practice, practice! There is a whole series of GP races in Illinois along with Hare Scrambles and other off road events. To compete you will need to be an AMA member and have a District 17 card. Call 1-800-AMA-JOIN and the member services call center will sign you up for the AMA and have the info on how to contact district 17.
Good luck.

"Dirt is for racing on...Asphalt is for getting there" OR "Flat trackers go in deeper and come out harder... OR (With apologies to General MaCarthur) "Old motorcycle racers never die, they just slip off the groove and fade into the dust!

This race is part of the AMA District 17 GP series (in fact it's the event that prompted the district to start a GP series). If they don't rain date it, it's likely because finding an open date this late in the season is difficult. There are still 2 races on the GP schedule: October 19 at Fox Valley in Wedron and Oct. 27 in Canton. The Fox Valley event is on a Saturday as part of a Fox Valley double header with a District Hare Scrambles on Sunday at the track.
There's still plenty of riding and racing left into November with GP, HS & Dual Sports on the schedule.
