2011 KTM 450EXE Thoughts?

Somebody talk me into or out of this.

I love my Sumo, but it just doesn't belong off road. I've been looking at dirt bikes but I'd really like the idea of exploring on one of these and not worrying about getting stuck, plus having enough power to have some fun.

My new house in KY has a ton of off road trails and such nearby, but not really near by enough to risk running down the road on a non street legal dirt bike.

I've thought about a DRZ400S, but the KTM is a lot cooler.

I'm not fast off road and don't plan on any big jumps. I figure this could last me a long time.

the EXC's are great bikes. the '11 was the last year for that engine, so the few issues that showed up in the 08's and 09's are fixed.

Just keep in mind that it's an offroad race bike with lights. Fast and light, but also easy to overheat and small oil capacity.

A newer 250 is all you need amigo - Enough power and lighter and many a good rider atop a 250 can run with a 450 - I use to pass Roman on my 250 and him on his 450 all day long

If you are going to do mostly trails with a little bit of road riding to get to the trails and back, get the KTM.

If you are going to do mostly road riding with a little bit of trails mixed in, go with a DRZ like mount.

nice bike, not many for sale, I bought a dr-z 400s 10 yrs ago, big bore and hot cams and as bunch of other stuff, rode it extensively in so-cal for years, big mountain trails and such, loved it, then this fall I went to do the leaf river ride, dr-z was acting up from sitting so long, so I borrowed a friends dr-z 400K , kick start no battery small flywheel FCR carb, it made my dr-z feel like a truck in comparison, I lost all interest in fixing my S model, looked at the KTM's which are expensive and hard to find used ( if you want a 4 st) and I started looking at the husky TE bikes 08 and newer , bought a 09 TE 450, and while it does need a little sorting out I can tell after the first ride it has great potential and the DR-z400S will be for sale

that 08 is a SX, been on CL a while, looks very nice but MXA says its a dog and current owner is riding in forest preserves so probably not taking best care of it, most ktms for sale are 50-65s and /or 2 strokes, finding a nice exc/xc-w 4 st model is the challenge, and OP wants street legal

I agree a 250 would do, but I haven't had a lot of luck finding a street legal one (in Louisville, KY). I like the Kawi KX250s and would grab one if I could find a deal. But I also like the KTM, I agree it's more $$ and power than I need. The DRZ just seems to heavy. I don't really want another heavy bike for trails.

Now that the 690 is sorted it will stay my road bike.

most of the 250 dual sports are porkers too. the KLX250S and WR250R are both right at 300lbs ready to ride - hardly any lighter than a DRZ.
