Moto-Angel Volunteers Needed for Family in Need - May 9th *** UPDATED***

On April 18th, Chris Allgire was struck and killed on his motorcycle on his way to a Bike Blessing in Portgage IN. He leaves behind a wife and 3 Foster children.

Laurell Allgire, Chris' wife, has a yard full of logs that were just recently deposited there by the tree service which need to be cut and split because this is what they use to heat their home during the winter months.

Because she is a Foster Parent, neither her, nor her children are allowed to operate any machinery and the City is giving her a hard time to get the logs in her yard taken care of. They have 2 log splitters, one large and one small, but the large one is broken.

We are calling for Volunteers who would like to help and have chainsaws and/or log splitters to help in the processing of these logs into firewood for the family.

If you are interested in volunteering your time and services, please email me at: [email protected] for more information.

Thank you.

~ Timmay

man that's rough... Be careful out there...

I have had similar close calls... Scary how quick everything can go from a nice ride to "holy [email protected]#! I almost died right there"

Motorcyclist dies in crash at Ind 49 and Division Rd

Back to Front Page

Porter County Sheriff’s Police said a Portage motorcyclist died in a crash with a pick-up truck Saturday at Ind. 49 and Division Road near the Porter County Expo Center.

Police said Chris Allgire, 52, of 5302 Stone, Portage died after he was taken to Porter hospital following the 11:03 a.m. crash.

The other driver involved, Richard Howe, 45, of Crown Point told police that he was northbound on Ind. 49 proceeding to turn westbound onto Division Road when an oncoming southbound motorcycle in the right-hand only turn lane struck the rear passenger side of his truck.

The police report noted that several vehicles were in both the northbound left-hand turn lane as well as the southbound lane for both left-hand turns and southbound traffic.

Another motorcyclist who was behind Allgire told police that Allgire was in the right-hand turn lane and had the green light, so he began to accelerate southbound on Ind. 49 when the pick-up truck turned in front of him. The witness told police that Allgire and his motorcycle flipped over the truck before sliding to a stop.

Another witness told police that the second motorcycle also struck the rear of Howe’s pick-up.

Police said Allgire left about 73 feet of skid marks before impacting Howe’s truck. Police said improper passing on the part of Allgire contributed to the crash.

Police estimated damage at up to $10,000 total to Howe’s 1989 Ford truck and to Allgire’s 1995 Harley Davidson.

Depending on the date / time I may be avail.. think the idea of a little CLSB outing is a good idea.. 10 guys showing up.. knocking it out quickly.. saying "you're welcome maam" and heading out.. Paints a rather pretty picture

Right now the date being targeted is May 9th. I will be bringing 2 Chainsaws myself and will be meeting with the family early next week to firm things up for the 9th, in addition to working on getting the broken log splitter operational before then.

Please see the website (www.moto-angels.org) "Events" for information updates related to this.

Thank you,

Wonder if anyone on here would know how to fix the splitter...
that would be twice as good.. make the job easier, and leave them with working equipment

btw.... I'd almost pay money to see you riding with 2 chainsaws

Sadly, I will probably be caging it for obvious reasons... although with a couple of belt straps I could probably sling those chainsaws cross-shoulder rambo style on my back for the ride!

She believes the problem with the large log splitter may be a starter. I'm going out monday afternoon to evaluate the problem, and once identifed, trying to enlist a local engine repair shop to donate the time/materials to fix it. The idea is to get it in working order so we could use it on the 9th and they would have a working one from this point on if needed.

wow that sucks, classic case of pulling out in front of a rider. plus the guy was on a harley

ill make sure to try to be there also to help this family out cut wood and what ever we can do some labor with and see how we can help since the husband died and some how make life less miserable by showing people do care.

Update

***UPDATE: Laurell and her husband have been Foster parents for more than 15 years and have taken in more than 20 boys. She also operates a dog rescue in her home also.

There is a LOT of logs that need to be split & stacked, approximately 10-20+ cords. If anyone has a log splitter, wheelbarrow and/or axe please bring it. We could REALLY use it.

RIDE OUT MEETUP:

When: Saturday, May 9th
Where: 15259 Olympic Lane, Lockport IL 60441
Time: 8:30am - Departure
I will be driving a work van so I can haul chainsaws, wheelbarrows, etc. and will be providing at least 2 chainsaws and 2 wheel barrows.

DESTINATION: 5302 Stone Ave., Portage IN ~ approx. 9:15am-ish

PLEASE RSVP by email so I can put together a head count to identify how much help we'll have and how much more I need to get. Thanks...

The one running log splitter has a cracked carb mount, but I suspect that may be able to be fixed with some JBWeld... anyone have an opinion on it? It did fire up though. The larger log splitter I am working on getting repaired...

Yes, we ended up cutting and splitting about 4-6 full cord for the family. They now have firewood to heat their home this winter.
