Alice in Wonderland

My sister, niece and I went to the mid-night show tonight. It was amazing. The music was good. The special effects- amazing. It followed the book more than the animated from 1951. I love Johnny Depp and he was amazing as always, but he didn't make the movie. The entire cast blended very well. It was funny, sad and a little scary all in one. The 3d effects weren't typical cheesy stuff popping out at you. Ann Hathaway was great as was Helena Bonham Carter. The big surprise of the film was Mia Wasikowska (Alice), I have never seen her before, but expect to see a ton more of her. She really captured the audience. Over all a fairly dark movie, exactly what I expected from Tim Burton. I would recommend seeing it in the theater, the 3-D experience was great overall.

You had me at Ann Hathaway.

We are seeing it tonight at AMC, though not in 3D.

I wanted to check it out in 3D at the Gold Class Cinema, but Brianne gets ill during 3D movies, because the projectionist typically doesn't know how to focus for a 3D movie.

Erik, my sister also has some issues with 3D and she was fine. Like I said it's not the pop out at you crap that you normally see in 3d films. That's one of the great things about Disney 3d, it's a total experience. There were points in the movie that it was like looking at a field in front of you instead of a screen. The young lady in front of us tried to touch the effects a few times. You really do feel like you are in the scenes.

Bug and JRobbins, it's not exactly like the origianl animated version. Not as trippy, but good none the less. Like I said not exactly like the cartoon, more like the book. And I have refound my love for the Cheshire Cat.

Well, 90% of my life is that state of mind so why should this be any different?

I kid, have not smoked since I owned a Superduke and was stuck in the Mtns with Maynard watching me sleep (shiver)

Mandy is this something you would let Abi watch? I'm not sure if this is appropriate for kids or not since it seems so dark.

It's getting some pretty poor reviews. I'd say go the bug route and self medicate heavily before viewing for proper enjoyment.

Yes but Abi is a very dark mature kid. She loves Nightmare Before Christmas, Caroline, Corpse Bride and watches Dr. G medical examiner (the autopsy show) We are going to see it on the 9th after her doctors appt.

Everyone leaving last night was saying how good it was. The Joliet theater had it on 5 screens. I didn't hear any negatives.

I'm basing my statement on published reviews. I haven't seen the film or polled the audience.

If I were to describe it in one word it would be..."meh".

It is not mind-blowingly awesome but nor is bad. Good for kids I would say. Also save yourself the extra few bucks if you were thinking about seeing it in 3D, not worth it in my opinion. Nothing about the 3D show has any "wow" factor worth around $5 more per ticket.

Would I recommend it? Well I would not want to change your previous thoughts about it. If you were thinking about seeing it before, I would go see it. If you had doubts about seeing it, I would say stay home and watch tv until you can get Alice on DvD or watch it on TV.

Also just a little FYI: this is not the same story as the old Disney animated Alice in Wonderland. It is base more closely off the books and takes place appx. 10 years after the animated version many of us are familiar with.
