Sales Tax

I've been in the market for a new trailer for doing trackdays. Does anyone know how the process works for buying out of state? I found a new trailer in IN that I've got my eye on. I know I don't have to pay IN tax, but when I bring it back to IL will I get dinged at the DMV?

Thanks

Joe C.

Are you buying the trailer from a private owner or a store? If at a store, you might pay the sales tax there and they'll probably have Illinois tax forms, etc. Or if from a private owner, you might have to pay a flat-tax when you register the trailer here.

It's at a dealer.

I guess I thought there was an advantage in buying out of state. Apparently not

With a dealer, you pay the tax based on where you live, not where you buy it from.

If you buy it from a private owner, it's a flat-tax, and you pay it when you register it.

I got my trailer new in Michigan and paid MI sales tax then when I did the registration in IL I had to pay the difference because IL has higher taxes. I'm not sure how it works for used.

There is no use tax (sales tax) in Illinois on trailers sold between private parties. Read here (waaaay down at the bottom) for the offical word.

From a dealer, the rate is 6.25% up to 7.5%, apparently. You will need to pay it in order to register.

Call the dealer and find out if they pay the tax to IL. I guess it only matters if you are financing the trailer as well.

With my truck, I financed 7% of the sales tax (IN rate) and had to pay the difference when I registered the truck (.25% I think).
