And that is the price of a economy growing at such a rapid pace at any cost. That shit is real too. Our IT guy is from China and visits often, usually has some horror stories, and says even in Hong Kong the air is thick with pollution and doesn't feel right to breath. He says the rural areas where the factories are are even 10x worse.
How can we compete in manufacturing with a country that sees its own people as disposable for the good of the country? Sad.
On the bright side, they are making lots of new laws prohibiting many toxins in plastic and other materials at the request of American retailers. However the real question is how close are they following them and how strict are the retailers in enforcing them if the product price has to go up to meet them.

We in comparison is much better while not angels, however we were just as guilty during our industrial revolution. Pollution, human rights violations, no worker rights, child labor.......just like China but luckily they have the rest of the civilized world barking at them to shape up so they are getting with the program faster.

Was the Industrial Revolution any worse? Not condoning it, just saying it's nothing new.

And when I was in Hong Kong last year, the air pollution I experienced was no worse than what we see here. HKG is actually extremely clean in some other regards.

I am but the typical Wal-mart customer isn't and more importantly the retail buyers have no balls to make the decision to not buy cheap shit.

In general their air quality is worse than LA

I recently got in this argument with my father in law who goes there monthly and thinks HK is better than america in every way (and is pressuring us lightly to move there)
I pointed it out.. he said it was fine.. that the air quality was only bad in the bad high crime areas.. I tried to explain to him that .. that's not how it works.. he said I was wrong.. So I pulled out the iphone..

I think the difference with ours is that technology wasn't there yet. and gives us somewhat an excuse.

but we did have inhumane conditions in the work place.
