if you take it to the apple store they will swap it for a refurb for 199
otherwise there is a place up on north lincoln that's probably a bit cheaper.. i think they charged 160 when one of the people here shattered their screen on the first day they had it

See what they want to charge you to fix it. They have been known before to fix things for free out of warranty. Otherwise, check ebay for a used one to get you over until the new one is released. I am not sure about the upgrades for the June 2010 addition besides a flash for the camera and possibly flash support. Better screen resolution also. I'm sure you qualify for an upgrade, I would not pay $199 for a refurb when the new 3GS is going for $199.

the only real advantage to the refurb route (it doesn't say refurb - I am assuming.. they pull them out of a box and give you only the phone)

there is no contract extension

Stop being like all the other nubs and DIY: I did this when my screen broke. Totally worth it. Just make sure you notice you're prying between the screen and the metal bezel, not between the back plastic and metal bezel (which is kind of unclear in the videos). If you can tinker with a bike, a phone is not really that different. Watch the videos carefully, buy the shit, fix the phone for less.

Exactly, and it's still less expensive, plus less shame then letting the "Genius" bar butt fuck you for 299 or something ridiculous. When I upgraded to my 3GS (3 months ago) I sold my 3G for $250 (on CL). I got the 3GS for 221.17 or something like that. In retrospect however, I should have waited, but I'm impatient and am sure I can sell my 3GS now for like 3 hundo and still get the new one

$100?

I thought just the home button didn't work? It's a separate piece that's only like $10.

...I think. I have to replace the screen on my wife's 3G because she's a clutz but I haven't gotten around to it yet. I have the new screen, just don't feel like doing it

Yeah, I believe the button is under the digitizer itself. It's should be purchaseable as one separate thing. I would open up the phone first to see what the issue is exactly with the Home button...and see if there is an easy fix first...

Mm hmm. Which then requires the engineers to go back and have it fixed again in half a year's time.

Replacing just the home button is a HUGE pain in the ass. I actually damaged the screen when trying to seperated it to get to the home button.

Replacing the whole screen is easy and for $100 its not a bad deal
