Where can I take my kid?

It was a lovely cinco de mayo yesterday and Jeff and I decided we wanted a margarita and some mexican food, so we got home from work, loaded our 12 week old into the car, and headed out. The first place we went was super crowded and had a loud mexican band playing and there were a lot of people on the patio drinking. We decided it was a little much for Lucy so we left.

The second place we went was a small family taqueria; it was busy but not packed. There was no waiting list. There were several families with kids there, as well as several groups of cinco de mayo celebrators. It was very tame, though, so no drunken crazies.

We were seated, and the pajama-wearing woman seated next to us and her jorts-wearing scraggly-goateed white trash boyfriend both gave us the evil bitchy look of death. They proceeded to have a conversation (loudly, of course) about who would bring their baby out to a restaurant, about how if she had kids she would just eat at home all the time (to which I thought, well, then how will you get all your big macs, fatass?), and how we should have asked to be reseated elsewhere, away from her. Meanwhile the table on the other side of us asked how old she was and proceeded to tell us how cute and quiet she is and how lucky we are to have her.

So, to recap-- our kid slept the entire time, didn't make so much as a peep, we each had ONE regular-sized adult beverage, there were other families there, it was not a quiet restaurant, and this bitch was ugly. Were we SO WRONG to embark on this outing? Really, I am curious ... what is poor form for us to do with our kid?

I was of the understanding that we should avoid (1) quiet places (such as fine dining establishments or libraries), (2) places that pose a safety or health risk to our child, (3) bringing a stroller to crowded, hard-to-navigate areas, (4) bars, (5) any place smoky, and (6) whorehouses. Also I am of the understanding that if our plans are flexible, it is polite to avoid bringing her out when we know she's going to be fussy and generally loud and obnoxious. Anything else I missed? Because right now I really want to track down this lady from last night and have a come to jesus with her.

you've got it all down pat it seems. Don't let people get to you, life's too short.

edit: i'm going to be in San Antonio for work soon and I need a recommendation for a good mexican restaurant as well as a good texas barbecue place.

Both of our kids were out in restaurants at two weeks old and never looked back. WTF does she care if your kid didn't bother anyone?

I'd have to remark loudly (enough for the bitch remarking about you to hear) to my wife about how the lady is full of shit and should mind her business. It's stooping to her level, but that's just the type of person I am.

If I'm in a good mood, I'd say something like, "Excuse me, we couldn't help but overhear your comments about us. We're certain our child won't bother you. Enjoy your meal."

Who gives a crap what they think? That's just life. I had to tell someone once "Look somewhere else" instead of staring at me and my kid. They are not gonna affect me one bit. Kids are kids. They make noise, fuss, and cry, just like that jackass did when he was 2 and crapping his pants.

I'm not really sure why, but the Hooters by my house seems to be a very popular family spot by me. I go there on a Friday night before going out sometimes and see more families with baby carriers and small children than I do people my age. Weird.

And it really pisses me off when I get dirty looks from the families while laughing with buddies over stupid drunken debauchery stories. Sure, the stories are definitely rated R or better (or worse from their prospective), but guess what, you're at fuckin' Hooters on a Friday night, get over it.

/Rant over....for now.

But in reality, it sounds like you just ran into some bad seeds. Sure, when I go out on a date, the last thing I want is someone's baby screaming or kids being annoying as fuck, but I'll at least politely ask the server to be moved and avoid making a scene.

No, any parent with class will take a screaming baby out for a walk to settle down instead of letting it scream in a dining area. Almost all of us have endured a parent not doing just that with their screaming kid, but to sit and make snide comments within earshot of a couple with a perfectly-behaved baby bothering no one is just BS.

Your life doesn't end when you have kids. You add them to your life.

We were taking the terror out at 3weeks. Hell we took him to Alaska at 4 months. If the kids get to out of hand I'll leave the restaurant or theater to be polite to other people.

That bitch sounds like she can't have kids and is upset about it.

Yeah, theaters are a big no no, unless it is a movie for the kids. People give the big ole stink eye whenever people take kids to the movies.

People take these things too seriously!

I don't know how to answer this other then. I don't have kids and when we party at bars.... well... we get a little crazy...and if someone has their kid in a bar atmosphere, well... that's their choice and they can't really expect people to act like they are in church.

However... If Im at a restaurant, non-bar atmosphere... and there are kids in there... and IF its a night that gets rowdy... I get my butt to the bar or take my potty mouth somewhere more appropriate.

PS - Next time, text the girl riders if you are experiencing a situation like that. Problem solved.

Somehow in this day and age, people think that their passive-aggressive, almost-rhetorical-yet-obviously-directed-at-you comments can go over like no big deal. I'm not a hardarse by any stretch, but if you have something to say, just say it to me.

I blame social networking sites, global warming, and George W. Bush.

I would probably give you a more appropriate answer any other day but today I'm not in the mood to put up with peoples' crap so....

Next time, tell her that while you appreciate her input, it would probably mean more to you if she had taken the time to put some pants on instead of walking out of the house in her PJs.

I agree with you!
There is no reason to bring kids to hooters past bedtime and than complain if word fall you don't want them to hear.

Also there is no reason NOT to bring your kid to a family restaurant.

What you should have done, call 911 and tell them that the woman next to your table was talking about Allah and bombs and said something about this is the last night... Problem solved.

We never took the kids where it was known ahead of time they would be a problem or disturb others (this includes knowing they would be tired/cranky, it would be a place that they would be bored to tears and act up, etc). If we did go somewhere and they acted up they were removed...usually by me... I wasn't as cuddly as Mom and 9/10 times they got their shit together and we rejoined... That 10th time I had no qualms just up and leaving. They learn real fast what's acceptable behavior and what is not.

Everyone Exaggerates
