Camcorders

We're thinking of buying one. We obiouvsly want to be able to share with our family who are far away. We also want to be able to edit and save the good clips and maybe do a highlightreel at the end of each year. We'll probably eventually want to capture a few minutes of dance recitals and such, but for now we're really looking for short clips of things, like walking, chatting, crawling, etc.

Price point is flexible, with the ideal purchase in mind. Under $300 would be ideal.

Dicsuss. Share your experiences (well, unless you use your flip video for home porn, then I don't want to hear it)

The biggest problem with home videos is just lugging the camera around IMO. The Flip HD is small enough to just easily carry around. The video quality is decent as well. IMO it's a great little camera for what you describe.

The Flip will not take you up to and including dance recitals unless you are in the front row and don't want to recognize your kid on the video (only has 2x digital zoom and a fixed focus).

Other than that limitation, it looks like a good fit for all the rest of the impromptu stuff that you describe.

My latest fun is the panasonic hdc-tm700k (weighs about 14 ozs) (replacing a panasonic pv-gs200), but it's total overkill for what you are looking for.

Everyone Exaggerates

We're being taken for a ride... agaaaaaaain.....

At minimum, go with a 720p camcorder.

You better be nice to America or we will bring democracy to your country.

Looked at the Flips today; not impressed with the zoom on any of them. In the under $250 price range, a Samsung, a Panasonic, and a JVC each interested us. They each had HD, and varying levels of optical zoom. Gonna do some more research this week. I'm certain the magical interweb holds the answer.

How hard could it be to "lug" around a camcorder that fits in your palm? They arent as big as the old 1" tape camcorders.

I'm not crazy, my mother had me tested.

I keep my canon powershot in my diaper bag. Plan is to do the same with the camcorder, unless it also takes stills. Then I won't forget to "lug" it.
