War on Drugs

Well, it all seems to be going well.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100513/...ailed_drug_war

- The first drug-fighting budget was $100 million. Now it's $15.1 billion, 31 times Nixon's amount even when adjusted for inflation.

In the past 40 years:

- $20 billion to fight the drug gangs in their home countries. In Colombia, for example, the United States spent more than $6 billion, while coca cultivation increased and trafficking moved to Mexico - and the violence along with it.

- $33 billion in marketing "Just Say No"-style messages to America's youth and other prevention programs. High school students report the same rates of illegal drug use as they did in 1970, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says drug overdoses have "risen steadily" since the early 1970s to more than 20,000 last year.

- $49 billion for law enforcement along America's borders to cut off the flow of illegal drugs. This year, 25 million Americans will snort, swallow, inject and smoke illicit drugs, about 10 million more than in 1970, with the bulk of those drugs imported from Mexico.

- $121 billion to arrest more than 37 million nonviolent drug offenders, about 10 million of them for possession of marijuana. Studies show that jail time tends to increase drug abuse.

- $450 billion to lock those people up in federal prisons alone. Last year, half of all federal prisoners in the U.S. were serving sentences for drug offenses.

I should put my money in the jail system.

Do we learn nothing from history? People should take a damn page out of the '20s. Prohibition results in crime, creates industry for such things. Idiots.

...but as usual we all know what's going on here ----> $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ Lots and lots of money and jobs being made by this "war" against drugs. It gives the feds a heck of a lot to do, no?

yeah, it's working out so well.

all for a pipe that wasn't even enough to charge the parents for possession. Then, on top of it all, the stupid fucktard small dick I got beat up in high school cops charge the parents with child endangerment. Hows that for fucking irony? The guys busting in, firing live rounds in front of these kids, killing one dog and injuring another, (which tells you they weren't particularly good shots) and they have the fucking gall to charge the parents with child endangerment? WTF?

Most cops I've dealt with and that I know are decent guys. These SWAT team types are meatheads that jerk off at night dreaming about busting into someone's house and being a "hero". Thank God they got that pipe and vicious dogs off the streets.

Yeah, some people have made a lot of money out of this. I think that the jail system has been the biggest growth industry in the country for a long time.

Wow. What fuckups. I'm sure the body armor was no match for the Corgi and they did the right thing, being in fear of their lives.

So here is a scenario that I am sure comes up a lot:

Cops bust down the door when you are asleep. You don't know what is going on a pull out your pistol and shoot the first guy who steps into your bedroom. Who gets charged for what?

You fail to realize... they WANT you to go for a weapon (or create a situation where they feel like you are going for a weapon) so they can shoot you.

Maybe so, but it takes about 3 guys to get one out of a room. If you are prepared for it, you are doing to take a few down with you.

Anyhow, what an incredible amount of money to pay for, seemingly, little gain.

IZ agree.

legalizing or not, your not going to fix the problem with people being addicted to drugs. Especially crack cocaine. Crack causes people to turn into useless zombies that will do anything to get more crack.

If you want to do this morally. Have a government shelter, and give crack heads as much free drugs as they want till they overdose. This will drop the crime numbers.

The crackheads exist whether it's legal or not! Do you really think that it being a 'crime' really ways on any of them one way or another.

They're two separate issues, the addicts and the dealers. The addicts will exist in either case, the dealers cease to with legalization. Stop the one side of it first (the dealing) and tackle the other independently. Like anything else, as soon as you send something underground it becomes very difficult to monitor and control.

The way it is now, it will never be stopped, because it's a victimless crime. Both sides are getting what they want, and so it never gets reported. How are the cops supposed to stop something like that?

+2.

Could always have Customs/Border Patrol/Coast Guard look the other way when arsenic laced coke/crack/heroin and so on comes in, at very little to no cost to the taxpayer. Adding a little chlorine to the gene pool, so to speak.

Also, there's a good chance that being legal will cause the street price to drop so much that addicts will be able to easily afford to OD.
