Buying bike with MI title.

How do I go about buying a bike with Michigan title? The bike and the owne r are currently in Illinois. How is the tax collected, do I still pay just $25 Illinois motorcycle tax or do I have to pay Michigan tax too?

Thank you

Russ

Buyer signs over MI title to you. Take the title to the IL Secy of State MV office and apply for transfer of title (and plates, if needed). You will be given a IL tax form to fill out and take to the Dept of Revenue window in the facility. $25 tax will be due. Plus title transfer fee and plate or plate transfer fee.

Don't transfer your plates! ...unless you have personalized tags you want to keep. It's an extra $39 (I think) to transfer.

Last time I transfered plates to a different bike (last summer) it was $15 in Illinois. That's less than buying a new plate.

Your plate must have had plenty of time left on the registration period then...because to get a new plate is just the registration fee, to transfer adds another fee so if your past or right at the tag expiration it's cheaper to just get a new one.

Just make sure that the name on the title is the same as the person that is selling the bike. If it's not, I would walk away.

I know this from a bad personal experience.

I only bought 1 bike with out of state title before and that was 8 years ago, just don't remember what to do.

this sucks, it seems like I have a new bike every season. Over the years I've bought 5 bikes, but only had a chance to sell one.
