Chicago has a bottle water tax?!?

Seriously how can you people live in this city??? I live in the burbs, were i'm not taxed every time i turn around so maybe you guys are numb to it. I went to the local Jewel near work (in chicago) figured i pick up some bottled water for work. I normally just buy it at my local jewel but its easier since i only drink it at work. its on sale this week, case of 24 for $2.99.. sweet. but o no, there is a $1.20 city tax, plus having to pay 10+% sales tax on top of that! WTF?!?!

i now remember why i dont live here.

They will end up taxing you for breathing in the near future. It's Daley's world, you're just a paying guest in it. Now pony up.

Chicago (and surrounding areas) have some of the best tap water in the country. They are actually held to regulations that bottled water companies are not. Just sayin.

Oh yeah, fuck you Daley!

Some 10 years ago I worked for the Chicago Department of Revenue, at that time there were 23 taxes we enforced on companies doing business in Chicago. Now I know there is more. About half of those were collected by the state on behalf of the city, but the others had to be submitted directly to the city. You should have seen managers'/owners' faces when we would audit their companies and informed them of some of the taxes they failed to register for and remit. Some of the taxes are passed on directly on to the consumer so the business just needs to ensure proper collection, but others are on the business and are passed on the consumers indirectly. It's a tax world out there.

It's a "fee" not a tax

It's your responsibility to support your government, disenfranchised or lazy people, the poor, the ugly, the down-trodden, the depressed, the addicted, the bored, the injured, the related, the entitled...

Did you really think the Big G was going to eat the losses in the cigarette tax arena?

Smile and take it, like a good citizen now

NOVEMBER!

i was doing this for a while, but i drink a TON of water during the day, useally a .5 liter per hour. there is no cold tap water source close to me, but i do have power, so i have a mini-fridge and bottled water. yes i could go refill bottles and put it in the fridge, but for $3 a case of water. its easier to buy it. thankfully i live in a place were there is no crazy water tax, and i will buy my water in DuPage county

It's time for some corporate auditors to go in and expose where/when/why the tax money is being spent. Or, as stated before...come November...maybe changes can be made.

Many cities have invoked the same bottled water tax. Chicago isn't the first nor the last. Bottled water is a sham and has a lot of adverse affects on the environment as far as manufacturing and waste goes. It should be consumed as a matter of convenience and not as habit.

With that said, the entire bottled water industry is a sham. It's just filtered tap water that you can do at home. Get a reusable water bottle and a Brita filter. Given a blind taste test very few people can tell the difference between tap water and bottled water.

Nope....no change for Chicago...city elections don't come up until Spring of 2011 or 2012.

Chicago is full of fees and taxes and such just like every other big city. The thing is it's worse in other big cities...not that I'm endorsing Daley in any way, but if I had to choose between him and Bloomberg of NYC or the guy in LA...I'd stick with Daley.
Another problem is absolutely no one who would actually make a decent mayor has stepped up to run against him. Elections come up and there's no choice...it's either Daley or some unknown moron who's having delusions of greatness!

For the record...in the last 2 city elections I have chosen to abstain...I'm a strong proponant of exercising the right to vote but, what's the sense if there's no choice?

Buy your water in the 'burbs and bring it in like ALL the city residents do.

Maybe they should build more drinking fountains in the city. I would do that if i was mayor. create jobs and help the environment. They got toilets on the street in europe. Only time you see this is in a park, forrest preserve or highway rest stops.

they had black and white drinking fountains all over the place in the old days. strange you dont see those anymore

Taxing satellite tv is the same thing. What are you being taxed on an invisible radio wave cutting thru the atmosphere? How are they going to improve on the infastructure? Clean the air????

You do realize how expensive it is to launch and maintain a satellite? Just because the radio waves are invisible doesn't mean they dont come from a complicated, powered source that humans put in space. Especially with the current shuttle program retiring it's going to get even more expensive.

I have no problems paying DIRECTV/DISH for their service but do you not know states are charging taxes on satellite signals that they invest no money in? They don't launch them ,maintain them or upgrade them but they charge TAX on them for cutting thru the air. Directv is even pissed about it. It's just free money as far as some states are concerned.

In the city of chicago that is called an Amusement Tax and it applies to movie tickets, theater, opera, and anything else that may be considered fun.
