Anyone know any Porsche Mechanics?

My pop has a Cayenne Turbo that needs a head gasket swap -- thing is, the dealership quoted him $5,000 to do it.

Anyone know any Porsche mechanics that would be willing to do it for a bit cheaper?

Yeah, swap out that powerful Porsche drive train for one from a Fiero and you won't have any problems getting it serviced for cheap.

You don't just swap headgaskets on a vehicle like that. I am shocked the estimate was only $5k.

I know the Secretary of State inspector that deals with this shop. He swears by them. I have taken my wifes car in for some troubleshooting and I was very happy with their work. They always have some sort of Porsche in the shop.

alldata says 13.7 hours for the job. I could see it being 5000 grand if they charged 360 dollars an hour.

no way is a factory head gasket kit for that car $70/ea. Head gasket kits for our V-6's are $200/set. Sure the head-gasket itself may be $70 but with that being a bi-turbo v-8 there will be a lot of ancillary gaskets and o-rings. I just looked it up under all data, they list the right at 9.8 and the left at 10.8 but both at 12.7 + 1.0 for turbo motors. No way is that correct, I'd really like to see what porsche's warranty labor time is for both head-gaskets because something seems off. I can't see being able to add another head on entirely on one of those engines for roughly 3.0hrs. Personally without knowing the car i'd call the dealer and ask them what kind of labor time they were looking at using, but keep in mind there will be some extra labor for stripping the cylinder heads to sent out for machine work.

No way I'd take my $100K car to a back alley mechanic and let 'em loose on it. Either sack up for the job or put that sucker away and buy a used Civic with 100K on it for $500 in the meantime.

that was my train of thought as well but since it uses an Audi Bi-Turbo V-8 anyone who's worked on Audi's should pretty much know the ropes.

When things go perfectly it works out, but when they don't is when it gets ugly. When he gets in a car accident and it is taken apart in his garage then what? If he blows up the engine then what? If he goes to jail then what? If he crashes the car test driving it then what? If his garage collapses with it in there then what? Lots of hypotheticals I know, but sometimes they do happen, and with a car that valuable it really isn't worth it IMO.

There is a shit ton of extra parts. Valve cover gaskets, new head bolts, intake and exhaust manifold gaskets, new seals for all coolant pipes. 4 gallons of G12 coolant, 8-10 qts of synthetic oil and filter.... The 4.8 is one of the motors with chain driven cams. The transmission is going to have to come out, since the chain and tensioners are in the back. I would replace that at the same time. The only ones I have done are on 4.2L Audi engines. From what Ive seen of the few Cayennes and Touaregs Ive worked on, I wouldn't be surprised if the engine had to come out in order to pull the heads.

Sack up and pay the dealer or a Porsche specialist, but make sure they are replacing the chain and tensioners. Not sure if the Porsche motors have the same rattling problem.

If I was pulling my heads, I would also tear them down, clean them, grind the valves, replace the guide seals...

And for shits and giggles, here is a thread showing a teardown of a 4.2L non turbo.

Take it to Sal at Perfect Power. Man is a wonder mechanic, not cheap but one of the best in the US. Before Ruff open a Dallas, TX shop Sal was the only one authorized to work on Ruff's Porsches.
