jim joyce and armando gallaraga - the awesomeness of forgiveness and sportsmanship

so jim joyce blows an obvious call with 2 outs in the ninth to ruin the tigers' armando gallaraga's perfect game...and what happens? joyce is obviously completely torn up about the missed call and admits his mistake and directly apologizes to gallaraga after the game and the pitcher/the team/jim leyland AND the fans forgive him.

joyce was home plate umpire for the very next game and was CHEERED by the detroit fans...obviously not for the missed call but for how he dealt with the mistake and also for the incredible forgiveness shown by gallaraga. jim leyland who would normally present the lineup card to the home plate umpire asked armando gallaraga to present the lineup card to jim joyce to start the game which joyce accepted with tears in his eyes.

BOTH totally stand up guys...as gallaraga said...nobody's perfect.

presentation of the line up card (cant embed this video):

I would have flipped my shit if I was Gallaraga, props to him. Even more impressive was that he gatehered himself and got the 28th out of the game on the next batter.

It's a good story for sure. The rest of the country is making a MUCH bigger deal out of this than the dang involved parties!

Fuck that! As a former big fish ina small pond pitcher, I would be furious. there are only 28 or so perfect games EVER! I think its honorable on both parties, and I know thart ump is genuinly sorry, and I agree with the way gallaraga is handling it, but I would for sure be lobbying to have the official stat changed

He'll be better remembered for this incident and the way he handled it than if the call was made correctly in the first place.

That right there seems like sweet justice to me. (coming from a similar background )

these are not mutually exclusive. true justice would allow for mlb to fix this but selig has already decided not to as i am sure it would open up a huge can of worms but imho it does mean that instant replay should be introduced.

i just like these stories where people allow for the fallible humanness, that we all have, to provide forgiveness for another person.

Both of these guys and the way they're handling this is probably the best "role model" kind of moment professional sports has seen in a long, long time.

I really don't think this is anywhere close more important than a perfect game. It's too bad todays athletes have conditioned us to them being assholes. So when 2 sincerely nice guys are in the news, we're shocked. Like I said above, I'm glad there are athletes who can represent themselves with honor and tact, and I understand umps are fallable, but it should have been a *perfect game*! That is something that I guarantee will haunt him long after his corvette is gone.

dude i dont disagree with you...well mebbe not entirely true but i would say BOTH are important. obviously gallaraga deserves and earned credit for a perfect game but when that didnt happen 2 men had a choice of how to address this injustice and they chose the higher road. it just seems to me a relative rarity when this happens in professional sports these days and proof of this imho is that the way that these 2 men decided to deal with this becomes separate national news.
