Computer issue

A collegue of mine has a laptop, for which he doesnt remember the password. How do I bypass the windows password? Its XP but I think it must be a corporate edition, since you have to ctrl, alt, delete to get to the logon. I tried booting into safe mode to command prompt the password, but the computer seems to lock up when i enter safe mode. No mouse movement, no ctrl, alt delete to type. I get the welcome to windows box, with safemode in the corner but cant do anything

thanks

there is supposed to be a way to command prompt the password, but you have to be in safe mode to do this, i can get to safe mode, but the mouse/keyboard dont work then

You want to download this CD image and burn it to CD:

http://www.hiren.info/pages/bootcd

Then boot the machine to the CD, and run one of the password changers. I forget which one was the easiest, but one of them took me all of 10 seconds to do.

Keep pressing F8 after restarting the computer, before the Winblows logo and choose the option to load from CD/DVD.

Set the boot from CD option in the bios, make sure it has first priority in the boot sequence.

Get to your bios settings?

So why go thru all that when you can go into cmd and change the password there?

Try this

Quote:
# When you installed Windows XP (or when the people who sold you the computer installed it), it created an administrative account automatically. This account has NO password by default, and can be used to access everything in the computer. By accessing it, you can change any password on the system.

2
Log out all limited user accounts. When a limited user account is logged in, it prevents you from accessing the classic log-in dialogue.
#
3
Press CTRL+ALT+DEL twice. Make sure you are at the log-in dialogue. When you do this, the screen will flicker, and you will see the classic log-in that existed on earlier versions of Windows.
#
4
Log in to the administrative account. Change the username in the dialogue to "Administrator", and press ENTER or click OK.
#
5
Open up the command shell. Press START, click RUN, and type in CMD, press ENTER. This will bring up a window likely unfamiliar to you. This is the command line, it allows you to manage files or change settings without restriction (no restriction on the administrative account). Before the graphical environment of Windows, this is what Microsoft users used.
#
6
Change the password of the account. Type in (without the quotes, and yes, the asterisk (*) is necessary) "net user (username) *". It will ask you to type in a password, then to retype it. You just changed the password!
#
7
Log in. Exit the command shell dialogue, don't type in anything else if you don't know what you're doing, you could really hose down your computer. Log out of the administrative account, then log back in to your account with the new password.

I've got a boot CD to reset the local admin password.

If it's a work PC, don't screw with it. Otherwise I can drop it off to you.

If this is a corporate laptop, doesn't it belong to a domain? If so, why doesn't your friend call the help desk and have them change the password on his account?

If you ain't with us, then it's just bad news.

kinda what I was suggesting...
if it is a corporate laptop, just call the helpdesk and ask for a password reset...

The fact that the OP is trying to go through the backdoor is highly suspiscious...
