Woman convicted in nail-polish crash may leave jail for work
September 17, 2010 4:50 PM | No Comments

lorahunt.jpgThe woman convicted of fatally striking a motorcyclist with her car while painting her nails will be allowed to leave the Lake County Jail each weekday for work in northern Will County.

But Lora Hunt will have to worship at, or across the street from, the jail, a judge ruled today.

Under the terms of Hunt's 18-month sentence of periodic imprisonment for reckless homicide, she is allowed to leave jail during the day for work, treatment or community services.

Hunt was jailed for the crash that killed Anita Zaffke, 56, of Lake Zurich. Hunt's car rear-ended Zaffke's motorcycle on May 2, 2009, while she was stopped at a red light in Lake Zurich after Hunt had been applying nail polish behind the wheel.

Hunt, 49, of Morris, Ill., was a registered nurse, but lost her license following her conviction, her attorney Jeff Tomczak said. Her new job, which starts Monday, is as a secretary for a large company, he said.

Lake County Assistant State's Attorney Michael Mermel asked Judge Fred Foreman to investigate the job to ensure that Hunt was not taking the it as a way to spend more time out of jail. The job is a three-hour drive away,

"I want to make sure the court, or someone, makes sure this is not a made-up job," Mermel said.

Tomczak said that because Hunt is from Morris, she has a network of friends and family there, so it makes sense that is where she would find work. Tomczak said Hunt will take the train to her job each day, and the commute should take little more than two hours each way.

"It's not anything done for the purpose of being outside (of jail)," he said.

While Foreman agreed to have jail officials look into the job and provide him with a report, he said he would allow her to start the job for now.

"The fact that she has a job in this economy, I think is fortunate," the judge said.

Hunt also agreed to pay $5,000 of an almost $15,500 restitution payment to Zaffke's family next month. After that, she will pay $200 each month, Tomczak said.

Both parties also discussed Hunt's request to leave jail for church services on Sunday. Last month she asked to be able to leave jail to attend a three-hour church service in Morris each week.

Today, Tomczak said that Hunt had found a church in Winthrop Harbor, closer to jail in Waukegan to attend. Mermel asked that Hunt only be allowed to use the chapel services provided in the jail.

Foreman said he would allow Hunt to participate in any services at the jail and attend a church located across the street from the jail. He also said he would revisit the idea of her attending the Winthrop Harbor church at a Nov. 16 status hearing, if Tomczak provided him with exact times of the services and how long it would take to transport her to and from the church.

The husband and son of Anita Zaffke said they would like to see Hunt spend more time in jail.

"She is kind of ducking her responsibility of thinking about what she did," said Zaffke's son, Greg Zaffke II. "There is really no long, meaningful time to sit and think about what she did when you get out of jail every day. She got a light sentence and she is constantly grabbing for more and more time out of jail."

Tomczak said that despite the fact that his client leaves the jail, what she did never leaves her mind.

"She thinks about this every day, as do I," he said.

Since she has an income, I hope the Lake County Jail is charging her for the services she is getting (room, board, supervision, health care, etc.)

I don't get it. Why was it so easy for her to find work? I have friends who have been Out for a year or so.

Not really an update, we knew she'll be able to do that from her sentencing... Complete crap. What's the point?

I think she should have to pay for her transportation and supervision! Taxes should not be going towards that.

Also, what is the point of her sentence if she gets to leave all the time??!
While the whole thing was an accident - she KILLED someone!!! ...while painting her nails... most ridiculous reason for someone else to have to die.

And just on a side note- Since when can inmates LEAVE the prison? Also - since when does anyone with a jail record get a job over someone who has a clean record?

Fuck that dude. Thats fucking BULLSHIT!!!

If you get caught selling weed (a drug that can't kill you) you goto jail for life and don't get to leave. But if you fucking kill someone while driving you get to walk out and work... Where the FUCK is the justice in that?

(hand palm to face)...exactly.

this whole thing only makes sense IF:

1. the money she earns goes to pay for the cost of her jail time./restitution to the family.
2. if she spends half her time out of jail then her sentence is doubled in length and the judge who decided this works twice as long before retirement.
3. she gets run over by a truck doing her nails.

What a fucked up judge I hope he drowns himself in a bottle of gin while pointing a gun at his head so just as soon as he starts to shake from lack of air the finger pulls the trigger.

Cant hate on the girl for exploiting the judges weakness and grabbing what ever she can.

go time traveler style and go back in time, fuck his grandma, then shoot forward in time and then fuck his mom. Then return back to present state and call him a the product of two incest whores and hes your son and show video of you plowing the both members of his family. .

You can all rest easy knowing she will be able to go home for the holidays!

"The woman who was painting her nails behind the wheel when she caused a fatal crash will not be allowed to leave jail early.

But Lora Hunt did get permission from a Lake County judge Thursday to spend Thanksgiving and Christmas at home with her family.

Hunt was sentenced to a year-and-a-half in jail for the May 2009 crash near Lake Zurich that killed motorcyclist Anita Zaffke, who Hunt rear-ended at a stoplight after she’d been applying nail polish.

Hunt has been allowed to leave the Lake County Jail in Waukegan during the day to work at a job near her home in Morris, Ill., and also to attend church, receive counseling and perform community service.

Anita Zaffke’s son, Greg Zaffke II, said he was satisfied with the Judge Fred Foreman’s ruling but found it hard to believe Hunt would ask for a reduction in what he viewed as an already light sentence.

“She’s constantly coming back trying to grab more and more time off,” Zaffke said.

Prosecutor Mike Mermel also argued against the early release, saying Hunt “is hardly doing any time at all for a very serious and egregious crime.”

Hunt, representing herself, had asked to be released before the scheduled completion of her sentence on Jan. 22. Short of that, she asked to receive electronic home monitoring or to be allowed to spend Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day at home.

The judge denied the request except for the home visits on Thanksgiving and Christmas.

“I am so deeply sorry for the pain that I have caused the entire Zaffke family,” Hunt said in court Thursday. “I’ve realized that I was behaving very selfishly.”
