What's with people calling everybody "chief" and "boss"?

This guy called me chief and boss and sport about 20 times while talking to me. Is this meant to be a put down of some sort? Insecurity of some sort? I talk that way with my buds, but if I said "OK later fucknuts" I'm pretty sure he wouldn't like that.

My nick name at work was Chief for 15 years.

I was a Chef (French for Chief) and then I was a Chief Operating Officer, and then a CEO.

Chief fit fine. I kinda liked it.
