old friends

I talked to one of my closest friends this evening.

He has a drink problem,He will be serving 366 days in prison this next year for his 4th DUI.

My other best friend from my high school years is serving life for 3 violent crimes.

The reason I'm mentioning this is I was the ring leader through those years. We were some bad fellas.

Trust me when I say this as it's not a brag but more of a realization in regards to growing up.Over the years I've wondered if I had some input in regards to who they became as adults?

I was (get this) fortunate to get hurt at about 21yrs old in a fight.I spent a week in the hospital with severed tendon and bacterial infection in my right hand.Just two weeks before that fight I met my wife and moved down south here.

I love my wife she helped me be a better man.Leaving all of the rough times and those friends behind.I've wondered if I could have led them a little farther in life would they be as happy in theirs as I?

Just needed to get it off my chest these fellas brake my heart.

Gus

But I know for a fact that you've had many many positive impacts on so many others. Your experiences in life make you who you are. It's what you do with that experience and the decisions you make that make you who you are today.

I'm only 8 years out of high school and I have seen some of my closest high school friends get into some bad things. One of them overdosed - found a cocktail of shit in his system including heroin, coke, xanax, pain killers. He was in a coma for over a month and his grandmother died while in that coma. His muscles began breaking down. He can barely walk now. Shortly after making it out of the hospital, he went back to his old ways. I think he is finally trying to straighten shit out and only smokes pot.

Another one got busted for selling 1/2 pound of weed to the DEA. Another is serving a very long sentence for selling extacy. Those are just a couple of examples.

I'm glad I was able to remove myself from that situation. I'm not a religious man but...

I agree how long can you run with the youthful decisions?

I wonder what it is in life that helps young men make that transition?

The military helped change me. God knows I could have been kicked out for the first 2 years easy for the things/drugs I still was doing. Thank God I didn't. Habits are hard to break. Friendships and bones aren't.

Shit Gus, I don't even want to try and go down this path - Hard Time or Dead is what most of the kids I grew up with are doing right now - I left Cali to "get my shit straight" when I was 20 and I prob would NOT have done time as I would have been killed trying to not get caught

It's a scary sight to look back man

Every once in a while I hear about people from the past and how screwed up they are. It is hard not to feel sorry for them but like others have said, you grew up and changed your ways and they have not. Bad behavior tends to deliver bad results.
On the positive side, I knew some real knuckleheads that really cleaned up their act and are married and have families and left their wild ways behind. Pretty funny actually, I was more tame back then and go out more now. Late bloomer I guess.

Right on Gus. My old friends form High School weren't the most upstanding citizens either. Thankfully for most of them they straightened up (some after hard time)...still not running for congress or anything but staying out of trouble for the most part.

Growing up in a tavern on the south side, seeing the reality of the world from a young age...It's hard, but you try not to think what else if anything you could have done. You can only do so much for others....it's hard enough to keep yourself square sometimes.

Good things buddy

Tom

Gus,
1) You can't second-guess the past.

2) Every person is responsible for their own actions, regardless of the influence of others.

You can learn from the past, but you can't go back. Take the lessons learned and figure out how to continue moving forward from where you are today.

Many have done foolish things in our youth. Most of us figured out that there was no future in that, and moved on with our lives. Some don't. Learn from and remember the losses, celebrate the wins. There but for grace......

Craig

I still know people who are involved in stupid shit. It's only a matter of time before shit goes down. I stay away because I've got too much to lose.

Much respect to you Gus/Resurrrection. You're one of the OG's.
