New Spot For Bike Night?

Only in Naperville...

Liquor commission hears Show-Me’s complaints

Mayor and Liquor Commissioner A. George Pradel made no decision on the future of Show-Me’s on Thursday afternoon.

He and the rest of the liquor commission did, however, hear the concerns of residents from nearby neighborhoods of the restaurant and bar proposed for 1126 E. Ogden Ave.

Fifteen residents addressed the liquor commission, and another handful of letters from residents who could not attend were read opposing the issuance of a liquor license to the establishment.

“Must Naperville reinforce the idea that women are nothing more than sex objects?” said resident Jeanette Steiner. “Is this the message we want to set for girls in our community? Telling that one patronizes a restaurant such as Show-Me’s for their food and drink is really akin to how people rationalize subscribing to Playboy magazine for its thought-provoking articles.”

Residents Thursday afternoon had long lists of complaints against the restaurant: Increased traffic onto nearby Burlington Avenue, late hours that could include being open until 2 a.m. on weekends, the possibility of a future patio or beer garden on the site, an increased chance of drunken driving from the establishment, and the effect the restaurant could have on degrading the character of the Ogden Avenue corridor.

But Show-Me’s Girls — servers in short-shorts and tank tops — and the clientele they are likely to attract were an underlying current.

Most of the residents spoke in an effort to persuade the mayor against issuing the liquor license, but a small number simply encouraged restrictions to keep events at the restaurant and sports bar from getting out of hand.

“This is not a strip joint. It’s not a topless bar. It’s not where the patrons are all perverted and drive home drunk,” said resident Jon Burk, who advocated for restrictions against a beer garden, but otherwise welcomed the restaurant for the jobs and tax revenue it would bring, comparing Show-Me’s to Hooters and The Tilted Kilt. “These are establishments that sometimes draw people in for the first time for curiosity. If the food’s good, they go back, if the food’s not any good, they don’t.”

While the liquor commissioner makes the final determination on whether a liquor license can be issued, Pradel alluded to needing to respect the law in making his decision. According to a city attorney present for the discussion, the law requires the mayor to give out licenses “fairly and without bias,” and to “treat all applicants, including Show-Me’s, equally.”

“We have to make sure we don’t violate the rights of the petitioner,” Pradel said.

The mayor and liquor commission have two months to decide on the liquor license, but Pradel said he hoped to have a decision within a couple weeks.

“We appreciate thoroughly each person that took the time to be here,” said Pradel at the conclusion of the hearing. “We have 60 days to respond to this and I will be consulting with legal and the liquor commission and we will take everything into consideration … I will not make a decision until all the legal ramifications have been sorted out.”

And The Tilted Kilt doesn't whore up women just the same, right.

Handfuls of letter is also funny and I bet every woman that complained don't get any kind of flirty attention from men, ie; they are ugly.

I think the point is that there aren't any hooters or tilted kilts in naperville, and residents want it to stay that way.

The NIMBY people who don't 'want it' there are very very few. They just know how to sound like they are a greater number than they actually are. They are insecure people who are afraid their husband or bf will look at another lady who is better looking than them (like there aren't opportunities every minute of every day already). As for the 'holier than thou' in the group, perhaps I should petition the commission to not allow their church to serve communion wine since I think their religion has a negative impact on the self-esteem of children as they grow up and teaches them to believe in imaginary friends.

.... then these ladies go home and watch shows like Desperate Housewives...

Everyone Exaggerates

We're being taken for a ride... agaaaaaaain.....

QFT.

This is my favorite quotation from the entire article. I can't believe a man said this.

I personally like what Mayor Pradel had to say.

Quote:
In an interview, Pradel said he visited a Show-Me's location Oct. 22 in Springfield and "thought it was a regular restaurant as far as I was concerned." He said waitresses' uniforms at the restaurant "were tastefully done."

lol this. I've seen more hooch in dt naper on a saturday night than I have on Cicero and Mannheim combined.

"includes 10 used-car dealers or auto repair shops, 11 liquor stores and bars--two of which advertise lingerie fashion shows and a third billed as a "gentlemen's club"--three cut-rate motels and one trailer park. The squat, brick municipal building is next to a currency exchange and a few steps from an adult video store. The bars open at 10 a.m. and close at 6:30 a.m."
