Thought I would chronicle the building of a chrome 900RR for a customer. I'll update as it progresses.

Have you told him these 900RR's have no more junk yard motors?

Sorry to bear such news but these motors are becoming harder and harder to find.

Although I'm sure that's not your concern we'll keep that under our hats

Can't wait to see it done. The old CBR900RR's were badass! I like a lot of the bike styles in the 90s more than what's out there today.

That might have been the one bike Honda sold to the people that was truly exciting.

So many bikes over the years Honda has dropped the ball with excitement.

YOU MEET THE NICEST PEOPLE ON A HONDA.

Went to far with a lot of their bikes.

Why do people continue to question CP's customers?

They have a bike & then they mysteriously ... get a shit ton of money at once.

Then they bring their bike in and get it chromed out, and pay in cash from a Crown Royal bag. If they bought a new bike ... there would be paperwork involved.

With a little coaxing you can wedge a blackbird motor in that frame.

It will have the OEM bodywork. '99 yellow/white/black scheme.

Yeah, I think he knows. He is just partial to this bike and wanted to build a custom one. He has another one also that he will sell after this one is finished.

I have one right now. Yes, they are starting to get rare, mainly because the engines have a tendency to throw rods, and the cranks typically are not repairable, and new cranks cost about a grand. With all the bearings, labor, etc. it will be a $2000 job, so most people opt for a used engine.

That's the third lift only. Funny, there IS a Gixxer on it right now.

That is a factor in some instances, but usually not, as they just put the bike in someone else's name and can pay cash anyways. Most people just have a preference to a particular bike and want to make it look nice.

A nightmare. Won't run on two cylinders when you rev it up. Customer has been in there "adjusting" stuff. Another "where's Waldo" problem caused from internet guidance.

Serious question: How do the brakes work with chrome plating on the rotors? Are the brakes just disabled or does the plating just wear off after a little while? Or is it strictly a show only bike?

They look chrome because our awesome polishing is just so kick ass. They are actually polished, so once you start braking with them the surface the pads wear on will turn dull and bed in after a few miles. The rest stays shiny though, so no worries about chrome peeling off the whole rotor. Some parts lend themselves better to polishing, and others for chroming, depending on longevity and what the intended use is for the bike. I would do things a bit different for a show only bike though.
