iPad instead of laptop?

I have a friend who is trying to help a family member replace her old computer that is on its' last legs The end user is in her 60's and not technical at all, probably uses the current malfunctioning old computer about 10 times per month. Just uses it for email and reading news stories once in a while.
The end user sounds like someone about 10 steps below a casual user.
So here is the question. What do you think of a iPad for someone like this. Seems super simple to use and there will never be any driver conflicts or problems, unlikely to get viruses. iPad + wireless router, done. Can do email and read news stories. So can this be the stand alone solution? Do you really ever need to hook up an iPad to an actual computer or can you get away with using it on its' own?

Lack of flash support is kind of a big deal. Driver conflicts? Not sure what you mean, not sure where an email checker will run into driver conflicts. If she is only using it 10 times a month, wireless should not be considered. It adds unneeded complexity. If she were on the go, or was on the thing constantly and wanted some mobility, I'd say go wireless. Otherwise, getting a 60 year old to change their ways is a headache for the user and the people around them.

You need to hook the iPad up to a computer to activate it. This is gonna be the biggest hurtle, but can be done at the Apple store. Beyond that, you only need the computer for software updates, backing up, loading songs / movies.

I think as an email machine, its probably perfect. The built in mail application can handle a ton of different types of mail servers, and notifies you when you have mail. Most to all major news sites now have HTML5, so flash is not an issue. And if you want the NY Times, Time magazine, etc..... there's an APP for that.

What I think she will need to get used to, is typing on the on screen keyboard, but that again can be solved with a bluetooth wireless keyboard, or keyboard dock.

Good points. Forgot to mention that she travels to Ireland 4-6 months out of the year. Another reason for something portable.

Oh ok, so she is mobile. The ipad might be a good option. They are the perfect size for traveling. Just make sure she knows where the nearest Apple store is located. They have great support and will help set it up.

You can get an over seas 3G data plan. Not sure how much they cost....... Although she should be able to find a wifi hotspot.

The advantage to the 3G version, is that it has an actual GPS chip, which might be nice for traveling.

Ipad would be perfect, as long as someone in the family has a computer with itunes for software updates occasionally.

We (my fam and I) went down this path for my 75 year old ma - Not the best idea for someone who is not well versed in Computers - That and what others have said about the iPad needing to be hooked to a PC or Mac

The iPad is NOT a replacement for a Laptop or Desk Top - It has it's own market - It is basically a LARGE Smartphone with no cell capabilities (yet) - I could never give up my Laptop or Desk Top but do find more and more ways to use the ipad every day

For her, traveling and such - I would go with the Macbook Air - Super Light - Tons of Batt use in between charges and learning computers on a Mac is easier then a PC, IMHO

If she doesn't mind spending $1000 for a machine, then definitely go for the Macbook Air like Bug said.

Yeah, thinking the budget is 500 max. Spoke with him today and told him to bring her to the Apple store to try out a iPad, if the lack of keyboard freaks her out and she doesn't mind lugging around something bigger then a 15" laptop is the way to go.

Make sure to ask the reps how printing works on an iPad.

So if I have a network enabled printer connected to my wireless router, will it print straight from the iPad wirelessly?

That's what they say - I don't own a printer but that was one of the updates added to the new Rev

its for sure not a replacement for a actual computer. we were trying to cut and paste some shit together today and OMG was that i a nightmare where on a laptop it takes seconds since you have a actual keyboard and mouse. (trust me this was not simple cut and paste)

if she doesn't mind lugging something around and budget is $500, smaller 14" PCs are a dime a dozen at that price.

Yes and no. It only works with a few select printers, very limited ATM. I'm sure eventually it will expand, but not at this time.

The iPad is great at what it does, but it can't replace a computer. In this case though, email and Internet, it's great. Another option is the samsung galaxy, but I feel like the iPad was a bit smoother and easier to navigate. Plus, the iPad has a bigger screen.

If you're not tech savy - the iPad is no replacement for a desktop.
You have to know all the tricks to get around the limitations to basic things.
Printing was already mentioned. Access to many web sites is limited. And unless she is well versed in google doc or has access to citrix servers or something to fill in the gaps, you just have a nice toy to play Angery Birds on - and maybe read some ebooks.

iPad instead of laptop?

That said many nonpower users need a lot less out of their devices. I plan on getting my mom a gen2 iPad. It'll be perfect for her. She browses the web, buys stuff off eBay, watches videos on YouTube and does email. For 99% of her needs it fills it. For some specific things they will have a desktop but I imagine many non technical users wouldn't even need them. Believe it or not a lot of older people get by without even having a computer (gasp horror) lol
