Nuclear Attack - who is ready?

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/12/16/sc...r.html?_r=1&hp

Need some concrete blankets and tinfoil hats...

Quote:
The advice is based on recent scientific analyses showing that a nuclear attack is much more survivable if you immediately shield yourself from the lethal radiation that follows a blast, a simple tactic seen as saving hundreds of thousands of lives. Even staying in a car, the studies show, would reduce casualties by more than 50 percent; hunkering down in a basement would be better by far.

I'm ready, the bomb dropped on Chicago will vaporize me in less than a second.

Interesting info in the DHS documents, though.

supposedly if you soak your hand in cold water for a little while you can plunge it into molten lead and pull it immediately out without getting burned...

i dunno how well it will work for the whole body though

interesting how during cold war, since the scenario was all out nuclear war, nuclear winter and nothing survives it, the civil defenses lost it's importance, as there was nothing to potentialy survive for, you would die anyways in the -100 temps of nuclear winter shortly after the war.

now, when the strike scenario changes from all out war to a single low yield tactical nuke, the civil defense becomes very important again!

This is one of those things, that if true, you wonder how people found out about or how badly the first person that did it got injured.

My family has protocol in place in case of a if SHTF scenario. Least to say, it includes getting the fuck out of Chicago.

If your protocol for this scenario is fleeing, you are already lost.

We don't have any lead blankets but I have an older Geiger counter (1970s) and a good amount of Potassium Iodide to fend off the cancer for a few months.

Take that geiger counter to old metal folding chairs, then look up "nuclear reactor scrap metal" and "Mexico" (but seriously)

This has got me thinking. How much water do I need and food and medicine on hand if I want to be self sufficient for 15-20 days - lets say for 10 people.

Yes and no. My family has resources that would enable us to get a head start on things if there is ANY prior warning. Obviously, in order to implement portions of the plan, we would need to survive the initial blast

Not sure, maybe grab one of the protocol books from 1959.

Airstrip or launch pad in the backyard? AWESOME!

I was just talking about overland fleeing, which 99% of panicked Americans will take to once SHTF. You know what you're talking about, I'm just being stupid.

As for fleeing..... private plane is really the only plausible method for long distances. Most of the roads will be gridlocked from panic. Gas stations will quickly run out of fuel since trucks can't get past the traffic (or the refineries shut down). A plane can do 400 miles minimum in one shot, and the airports should retain their fuel for at least a little while.

As an added benefit, since most strips are getting fences now, it should keep the post nuclear blast zombies away from you while fueling.

As for water, 3.2 Quarts per day is required for minimum survival. (Replenishing your fluids). 13.2 Gallons is required for drinking, sanitation, and hygiene. So for a short period of time, (10 days x 10 people) you need 80 gallons of water to survive. That means pooping outside, no cleaning yourselves at all, kind of living.

Longer term, if you want to survive without getting an infection, bathe, clean dishes, etc. You would need (for 10 days x 10 people) 1320 gallons of water.
