Catholic Commercials

Has anyone seen these on TV lately? It's like a minute long bullet list style boasting parade. I guess they must really need members these days.

Oh and before any Catholic churchies get all huffy and puffy... calm down, this is merely an observation of something I found strange since I've never seen something like this.

They've done the "Come Home" blitz for the last 2-3 years now, around Christmas time. No idea how successful it's been but they're still doing it, so maybe it's worked for them?

Or it's an act of sheer desperation. They are trying really hard to get more $$ from the 'part time Catholics' who only attend mass on Christmas and Easter.

Pretty well made, considering the intended target.

Yep, numbers are dwindling for people who attend church. Read there has been an uptick in attendance with the bad economy but overall their base (older people) are literally dying off and new young blood is not there to take their place.
With the number of non-believers, non-religious people (myself included) growing things are not looking good for them. They still have a foothold in Latin America and are growing in Africa but these places don't have anywhere near the wealth that America can offer. And when you rely heavily on donations this hurts.

I get the general feeling that the current working generation is mostly passive in their religion. It seems like most believe in something but not so many make a serious life time commitment like they used to back in the day. Again this is merely just a personal observation.

I wouldn't say passive. Me personally, I don't feel the need to limit myself to worshipping only in a house of God. When I feel the need to pray, I pray. I do feel bad for not tithing though. It's not like I want churches to go away.

That's what I mean by passive. It seems my parents generation was much more involved (and still are) attending weekly or more, holding administrative positions within the church and being actively involved in missionary activities.

Ah, I'm use to those two being so ingrained into our political system that its hard to tell that the catholic church was the major player behind the bans. I thought all religions in general were against homosexuality and abortion being part of our law. Guess some are much more active than others

Some churches not hurting as bad as others. I ride past this place during the riding season on my early weekend rides and there are cars lined up to get in.
If I am understanding this correctly I am floored by the cash this place brings in, more than some corporations ..wow, I realize it is in Barrington had no idea.

http://www.willowcreek.org/giving
Look at the right hand side under weekly giving and ytd.

"South Barrington
Weekly Giving
December 6–12
Weekly YTD
Budget $540,000 $27,000,000
Actual $705,349 $26,234,298"
That is some serious $$.
Don't get me wrong it is everyone's right to do what ever they want to do with their money as long as it does not hurt anyone but I had no idea they had those sort of donations. As long as they are using it to help the less fortunate cool.

I wouldn't say grief but a hint here and there sure. Reverse psychology works pretty well on me usually so they know better than to pester me about it

Telling your congregation that it's their duty to God to go out and vote certain ways on particular things is bullshit. They apparently can't allow people to make up their own minds without being told exactly how to vote.

I disagree that churches are a dying breed due to the younger generation not attending. My church has grown quite a bit in the past 3 years and most of that growth has been younger couples. It's not a catholic church. No one tells anyone how to vote. Sure, my pastor probably doesn't support abortion or gay marriage, but I don't know if he does or not because he's never even hinted at his position on those in a sermon.
