What Did You Start On?

Okay, covered before, Yes - Am I Bored on a WebEx, Yes - So, I started going back and looking up old bikes and such

Attached is what I started on - Age 5, got my first Mini Bike - Hand me down from older Bros - 3 hp Briggs & Stratton with no brakes (used my feet Fred Flintstone style) and a string over the bar as my throttle cable

Age 7 - 1973 Honda Trail 70 (3) Speed - Taught me how to shift

Age 9 - 1978 Suzuki RM 80 - First Bike that was MINE and not a hand me down

Not original pics of my bikes but exactly what I had - I miss being young and injury free

I started on a Yamaha 80 that our friends in Ohio found in a creek and then restored. They taught me how to ride it. I think I was 7. Back at home, I rode my brother's Honda XR75 when I could. After he moved, I didn't have anything. I would ride whatever friend's bike I could. Either a dirt bike or street bike.

Then, when I moved into my own condo after college, I bought a used '92 ZX-6D.

If you ain't with us, then it's just bad news.

Let's see, progression of power sports.....

Age 4 - ATV up north (Honda 650cc?), and I have good memories of helping logging when I was 6 - 10.

Age 6 - Snowmobile (Articat 440) and Boat (Fibreglass with a Johnson 40hp). My dad wanted to water ski, but my mom didn't want to drive the boat, so I did.

Age 7 - Finally was allowed to ride the 50cc Minibike up North.

Age 12 - Snowmobile License (Polaris EX500) and Boat License (4 Winns with a 145Hp Suzuki). Water-skied my younger teenage years away until I was 18. On the water at least 4 days a week during the summer.

Age 19 - GSXR 750 (first real motorcycle)

5hp B&S mini bike at 7. Mine had brakes, but only on the back.

Rode most of my friends 80cc 2 strokes from 7-about 12. Most weekends and lots of days after school.

My dad's suzuki 250 4 stroke from 12-17, every weekend.
My dad's friends 350 4 stroke Honda from about 15-18, every weekend.

Suzuki GS500L (the first bike I actually bought and owned). From about 19-23
A buddy had a Gamma in that time frame as well. That's when I was first exposed to twisty roads and trying not to crash in to stuff.

Boats don't count...you just wanted to add that for the badass factor.

I don't remember how old i was...probably 8-10 and i rode my friend's pocket bike

About 12 or so and another friend got a 90cc 3 speed dirt bike. Got in trouble a few times with the WI sheriff with this one when i was 15.

Around 15 i got a POS honda 200cc atc. The thing is such a POS it's actually fun. It wobbles around sharp turns, the shifter is a vice grip that i have to grab to down shift, and it's the one with no suspension and balloon tires. I'm 18 now and still have that thing. I got in trouble with the cops on that one too. Sheriff in his SUV couldn't turn around and catch up fast enough on the windy two land road...he knew where i was staying though. That ordeal ended with "I don't ever want to see you on the road with an offroad vehicle again...now get the fuck outta here."

I'd love to find one of those Honda trails for a pit bike.

I started out riding a friends 1989 FZR 600 in 1991
Borrowed a friends Kawasaki EX 500 1993-1994
Bought my 1991 Honda CBR F2 in 1995, totaled in a head on in 1996.

No bikes again till 2006 when I took to the track.

Ha, those 1st 2 vehicles are what I started on as well,
I had a few of those B&S and Tecumseh minibikes,
We put a Kohler 12 hp generator engine on one, that thing was F*ckin dangerous
I remember my mom always picking us up from the Addison/Halstead Police Station

Next was a the 125 version of this, Look at all that suspension travel
Got it from Champion Cycle as a basket case, Fixed it and rode it for a couple of seasons.

Then I had 3 of these wheelie machines in a row (73 RD 350) I think that was the only color scheme of that year.

Most of the bikes I had were broken in some way when I got them and we'd figure out how to fix them and ride them... I learned a lot about wrenching in those years.
I still have a soft spot for those RD's, I used to laugh at the guys on the 4 strokes, they never understood how they got beaten so bady by a little 350

1996 CBR 600 F3 back when they didn't recommend it as a starter bike. I'd personally recommend some sort of FI bike to start on to new people, especially those who don't want a 250 - maybe an F4i. SV for all around duty.

How you found us: I tripped over ya on my way to the can!

I mooched alot of rides here and there when I was in high school on Yamaha twinjets and Honda 90's and such because I was absolutely forbidden to have a bike...On my 18th birthday I bought a Bridgestone 175 Dual Twin (Yep...same company that makes tires)
Before the summer was out I was flat tracking and scrambling that bike and STILL riding it on the street...by the following summer I had qualified for an AMA novice pro license and had a DT-1 Yamaha modified for flat track and traded the Bridgestone and some cash for a well used 3 speed on the column Ford econoline van... I acquired another DT-1 enduro for off road, ice and practice and didn't ride on the street again for 4 years when I bought a new '78 SR 500 Yamaha. I've had (and still have in several cases) at least 30 to 40 bikes since then.

"Dirt is for racing on...Asphalt is for getting there" OR "Flat trackers go in deeper and come out harder... OR (With apologies to General MaCarthur) "Old motorcycle racers never die, they just slip off the groove and fade into the dust!

If you want to anger a conservative, tell him a lie. To anger a liberal all one must do is tell the truth!

I did this count too - Including the mini bike and all the Mopeds, Dirt Bikes, ATC and street bikes, I am at 23 Bikes - If I could go back and take my "Keep One" it would have to be my 1985 Honda ATC 250r 2T with the fat as fuck Dura Blue Rear Shock - That thing was death on 3 Wheels and just an all put blast to ride in the dirt, on the street and in the snow - There is a reason they banned these machines
